Mar Cheshvan מר חשון – The 8th Hebrew Month

Chodesh Tov to you all! The month ahead is usually a difficult one. This is due to the idea that Cheshvan is the manifestation of all of the light revealed by the Chagim in Tishrai. Isn't light pleasurable? Yes if you have the vessel for it. Do you? Do you want to get back to your physical lives? Are you tired of the spiritual work involved with the Holidays of Tishrai?Lets look at what we learn from the permutation of the Tetragramaton.

Kabbalah of the Rabbi Issac Luria teaches that there are five worlds: Olam (world) Adam Kadmon (Primordial Man), Olam (world) Atzilut (Emanation), Olam (World) Beriah (Creation), Olam (World) Yetzirah (Formation), and Olam (World) Assiyah (Action). It also explains that the World of Adam Kadmon connects to the tip of the Yood of the Tetragrammaton. The World of Emanation connects to the Yood of the Tetragrammaton. The World of Beriah connects to the upper Hay of the Tetragrammaton. The World of Yetzirah connects to the Vav of the Tetragrammaton. While the World of Assiyah connects to the lower Hay of the Tetragrammaton which is our physical universe.

Now when we permutate the letters of the Tetragrammaton we are able to speak of the position of the Worlds as being distinct from the letters themselves. Please see the following discussion about what the letters in the position of the worlds teach for the month of Cheshvan.

Olam (world) Atzilut is the first position in the Tetragrammaton and for Cheshvan that is the Vav. The vav in the first position indicates that a large amount of light and energy or divine flow is flowing into the highest world of Atzilut. This flow manifests in Olam (World) Beriah as we see below.

Olam (World) Beriah is the second position of the Tetragrammaton and it has its normal Hay. The additional flow from above is being manifested in this Hay.

Olam (World) Yetzirah is the third position of the Tetragrammaton and in this permutation the letter is a Hay and not a Vav. This means that the energy that manifests in the world of Beriah is not being channeled to the lower world of Assiyah. The Hay in Beriah and the Hay of Yetzirah being back to back indicate that the vessels of the mind and heart are being expanded. This teaches that this month of Cheshvan is a good month for mind and thought contemplation and working through ones emotions.

Olam Asyiah has the Yood in the fourth position not the first position. The yood being the smallest letter and being in the physical world is an indication that the physical activity during Cheshvan should be minimized. It is not a good time to start new ventures.

Here is the permutation:

וההי ד ןנ

On the physical level, Cheshvan is referred to as Mar or bitter Cheshvan due to its lack of having a holiday during the month and also due to the Flood of Noah that started during Cheshvan.

Another reason that the month of Cheshvan is called bitter is that the flood of Noah started on the 17th day of Cheshvan and stopped on the 27th day of Cheshvan one year later. The regular Hebrew year has 355 days not 365 as in a solar year. The flood lasted 365 days which is a solar year.

There are 365 negative Mitzvot. These are the Do Not Do Mitzvot (like Do not Murder etc). The body has 365 soft body parts like veins and arteries, ligaments, and sinews. Our soul has parts connected to these body parts as well.

The flood coming from water, which is from the energy of Chesed (lovingkindness) starting in Cheshvan, finishing in Cheshvan, and taking 365 days has a specific connection to our body and soul and the energy of Cheshvan. The rest of this email will explain that connection.

As the kabbalists teach, we learn that the cause is always spiritual and not physical. Therefore a lack of Holidays or the flood starting in Cheshvan is not the cause of Cheshvan being called Mar or bitter.

Not all of Cheshvan is negative. We learn, that in the future time of Mashiach, the Temple will be inaugurated during Cheshvan.

Let us learn more about Mar Cheshvan and then perhaps we can deduce the reason it is called Bitter and also how to transform it from the Hebrew word Mar or bitter to the Hebrew word Ram or elevated.

Ram and Mar are Hebrew words spelled with the same letters in reverse order from each other. We can reverse the order of the letters in the bitterness of Cheshvan and thereby convert Cheshvan into an elevated state without bitterness.

Let us learn from Abraham and his book of outreach to the people of his generation (which includes us) the Sefer Yetzirah.

Letters of the month: ד. The dalet created the planet Mars and Mars is considered the planet of war. We learn in Kabbalah the only war that is real is the war against the desire to receive for oneself alone which is the war against the Satan or negative forces. A flood is too much water. That is too much Chesed (Loving Kindness). The aftermath of too much Chesed is bitterness.

An example is a child who is raised by a mother who smothers the child with love and caring and thus does not allow the child to grow and develop. At the end this child finds it difficult to function in the world because his mother always did things for him and he never learns to do them for himself. The child feels bitterness towards his mother.

Nun נ ן is the letter that created the constellation that we call Acrav עקרב (see below for additional info on Acrav). The letter Nun is considered to be the letter of Mashiach. This is because the word Nun as a verb means “to reign” and when it is a noun it means “heir to the throne”. All of this royal connection, connects to the ultimate (next to Hashem) King Mashiach.

The nun has two forms. The regular form is bent over as it is limited by the present reality. The final form stands straight and even goes below the line to bring Godliness to the lower nether (under control of the negative system (Hell)) regions.

Together the two letters spell the word Din דן which means judgment. Judgment is a good thing. . .provided you are doing positive actions. If you do positive the judgment is positive and everybody wants their reward. If you do negative actions the judgment is negative and almost nobody wants their punishments.

Of course the Kabbalists are different, they want the judgments in either case. One is cleansing and one is pleasure to the Kabbalists. The Kabbalists are not insane, just more aware of the spiritual worlds and their process than most people.

The gematria of the word Cheshvan is 372. Other words with that gematria are “God is his Name” spelled יהוה שמו. Another word with this gematria is עשב which means plenty, abundance, satiated, or full.

Together the two letters spell the word Din which is judgment as said above. Judgment is painful when the vessel can not handle the energy. An example is a 220 volt air conditioner plugged into a 110 outlet. The A/C unit will burn – judgment. Only because it is the wrong vessel for the fullfillment of that form of electricity.

Mazel: The astrological constellation is the Akrav or Scorpio, Scorpion. Akrav is spelled עקרב. Look at the 4 letters. The middle two letters spell the word Kar which is translated as cold. The scorpion has cold venom that is deadly. If one removes the coldness than what is left is the Ayin Bet from the Ayin Bet Shmot - the 72 Names-of-god. Think about the permutation of Mar to Ram here?

Tribe: The tribe of Menashe is the Eighth of the Tribes when it comes to giving offerings at the Mishkan dedication. There is much to be learned from the Name Menasha about the characteristics of the month of Cheshvan, so here is the link to the eighth day of the dedication that we have available on our website.

  • Nissan Day 8 - Tribe of Menashe.
  • I suggest you spend some time during this month checking out the attributes of the name Menashe and the Name of the Nasi who gave the dedication and his consciousness of why he gave what he gave. Remember not all of these attributes are positive and with restriction we can correct them and transform them into positive aspects.

Menashe is the first born of Joseph and channels true brotherly love due to his acceptance of Jacob choosing Efraim to be on the right and not he as the first born. Also Menashe and Efraim are used as a Blessing towards sons by all Jewish Fathers on the Shabbat. This is because they became righteous even with being born outside of Israel in the Diaspora.

The name Menashe actually means to “leap up and away”. This is usually translated as “to forget” as he “forgot” the issue of the first born with Ephraim. Menashe represents the power of the Tzadik to let us forget the pain and suffering in this world in order to connect to the coming pleasure of Mashiach manifesting now. For it is only through joy and happiness that we can connect to Mashiach who is the channel for joy and happiness.

Menashe permutes to spell Neshamah (one of the Hebrew words that translates as soul). This represents Menashe's ability to reveal the divine soul in Israel. This power comes from the Akrav when we remove its coldness. As we see above, when we remove the coldness we have left the power of the 72 Names-of-God.

Sense: Smell. We are taught that the sense of smell was not used by Adam and Chavah when eating from the Tree of Knowledge. Therefore the sense of smell was not corrupted by that action and is the highest sense we have. Mashiach will utilize the sense of smell to determine what Tribe each persons soul root comes from. He will also use the sense of smell to determine to what nation a soul belongs.

Controller: Intestines. In Hebrew intestines is dakin spelled דקין. The root is the same for the words grain (dak) and minute (Dakah). All of these items have one thing in common; They can dissect things into finer and smaller parts and then again into finer and smaller parts.

In preparing the incense the priest had to pound the ingredients into smaller and finer parts in order to achieve a “pleasing aroma to God”.

This ability of the intestines is consistent with the sense of smell. Since the sense of smell takes small particles in order to differentiate the different odors.

The color of the month is Violet.

Energy Days: Cheshvan has no Holidays but it has three high energy days. The hilula of Rachel and Methusalach on the 11th of Cheshvan, the start of the flood on the 17th of Cheshvan and the end of the flood on the 27th of Cheshvan.

The 11th of Cheshvan is recommended to be an all night study by the Kabbalists to connect with Rachel Imenu, Methusalach and Benjamin HaTzadik ben Yaacov Avinu. We will have a recorded session on Monday night the 7th of November at 10 PM west coast time to connect with these 3 righteous souls. The phone number is 940-287-4000. The pincode is 911904#. You also need to agree to be recorded. There will be an oovoo video call also.

Also take advantage of all of the Tzadikim that left during this month of Cheshvan. There is someone who left each day and they will relate to the Sephirah of that day.

  • Here is a link to the Hilula of all of the Tzadikim who left in Cheshvan, day by day.
  • The more you learn about an individual Tzadik the more you can be assisted in your spiritual work by the work that the Tzadik did during his lifetime. He is making him or herself available to you. I hope you will utilize them. All you have to do is light a 25 hour candle in his or her name.

Tikune or Correction for the Scorpio.

If you do not know where is your north node, refer to an astrological chart or write to yeshshem@hotmail.com and give us your time, date, and place of birth.

For people who have their north node in Cheshvan, their lifetime correction is letting go of their fear of loss. In the last lifetime they were a Taurus and lived their life in an extremetly structured manner. In this lifetime they must risk and be free spirited which will entail some material loss. That is their Tikune, to trust in Hashem to provide for their material well being.

During this month the Astrological influence on all of us will be “to be more intensely reactive”. We must resist our reactions in order to overcome this very potentially difficult month. If we succeed in resisting our reactions we transform the word Mar into Ram. We change the bitterness of Cheshvan into a very elevated month of Cheshvan which will allow us to use the 72 Names-of-God to accomplish our goals.

One final point. Always remember when dealing with a Scorpio and during the month of Scorpio, they are the only animal that when in crises will EAT their children. They just do not know what they are doing when in crises. This is the strength of their reactions during the month of Scorpio or Cheshvan. It is also the potential of our reactions during Cheshvan. We need to use Binding by Striking constantly during Cheshvan to remain in balance.

To calm a Scorpio who is in crises ignore them. To stop ourselves from going into crises during Scorpio use binding by striking . The reason the month can be difficult is when we do not use Binding by Striking we can become just as self destructive as any Scorpion (Has V'Shalom).

When we use Binding by Striking we remove the coldness from the Akrav (Scorpion) and find what is revealed is the power of the Light of the 72 Names-of-God.

    Have a good month!

    Chodesh Tov!
