Week of July 19, 2009 Shabbat Chazon - Devarim , Av 4 5770 | |

There is a special mediation taught by the ARI to be said and connected with during the 3 week period between the 17th of Tammuz (a public fast day) and the 9th of Av (also a public Fast Day). Look for this meditation on the Yeshshem Website at This Parasha has no Zohar to help us understand what is said. What can we do? We can understand that Devarim was written by Moshe himself and not Moshe taking dictation from HaShem. We can understand that Devarim is ALWAYS heard the Shabbat before Tisha B'Av. So lets understand the relationship. Tisha B'Av (the 9th day of AV) is a day that the Talmud explains is the day that the Satan controls and also the day the Mashiach is born. Tisha B'Av is a day associated with lots of chaos in the life of the Hebrew nation. It is the day the Torists/Spies returned form the Land (Parasha Shlach Lecha). It is a day that every person of that generation died at the decree of Hashem. It is the day of the destruction of the First Temple and also the Second Temple. It is the day of expulsion from Spain in 1492 and the day the Jewish Problem white paper was signed by Adolf Eichman in 1942. There are many other horrific events on this day. So what is the relationship between the Mishna Torah (Torah repetition) called Devarim and Tisha B'Av. What we learn from all of this is that we need unfiltered energy of protection for this day. What is meant by unfiltered. This is a great spiritual lesson. Our eyes are the window to the soul. We receive metaphysical energy on many levels through the letters of the Hebrew Aleph Bet. ON the level of sight by their shape; on the level of sound by the hearing of the Torah reading on Shabbat. When we understand the message like this commentary, we are veiling some of the energy because the energy is unlimited but our understanding is limited. Devarim gives us direct unmitigated energy that we need to handle the negative aspect of the 9th of Av. It also gives us the ability to connect to the conception of the Mashiach - may he come today! Devarim is a Hebrew word that means Words, or Matters. There are 105 verses in the Parasha and the code word is מלכיה. It means Yood Hay is King, or King Yood Hay. The midrash explains that Moshe started talking on the first day of Shvat and spoke continuously to the Nation for 37 days until his death on 7th of Adar. All of the Sefer Devarim is his words to the nation. Most of the words are admonitions - learn from our mistakes. They apply to us in our time, in our place, in our generation and to each of us individually. What can we learn? There is one unusual item within the Scroll itself. In Chapter 2 Verse 8 of the Book of Devarim there is a space in the middle of the verse. One explantion is that this space represents the 38 years of wandering in the Desert learning Torah. The incident of the Tourists took place in the second year and this talk of Moshe takes place in the 40th year. There were 42 stops in the desert. The stop at Kadesh took 20 years. and the other 41 stops took the other 20 years. In all of these 40 years the Nation caused Moshe difficulty. Yet he did not tell us to stop. A few times he discussed it with HaShem but he never told us . . . until just before he passed. AFTER 40 years of holding in his words. What can you learn from this? What do you do when your wife tells you to be home on time ready to see her mother? Do you ask Can't we see them another time? not Moshe. I can give you plenty of other examples yet this spiritual lesson is about restriction. This is actually the most important spiritual lesson taught to us by Moshe. The Baal Shem Tov and others teach that we create the universe we are in; Each person creates the universe we are in; HaShem balances all these different universes. Each action we do creates an effect in the universe we create. If we fill our universe up with negative actions we receive chaos as part of the Boomerang Law. If we fill our unvierse up with positive actions we receive Blessings as part of the Boomerang Law. When someone bothers us in our universe we created it is just the Boomerang Law working. If we react to what bothers us we are creating more chaos; if we restrict than we choose a totally different universe which has less chaod. Try not reacting for 4 minutes and see how hard it is and then think about Moshe who restricted 40 years. Enjoy the Reading!Shabbat Shalom Kol Tuuv Shabbat Shalom chanoch P.S. I am looking for volunteers to translate our recordings into many other languages. Come share in the revelation of wisdom. Use your native language skills. All you need is a cell phone that has unlimited long distance and approx 3 hours a week. Write to chanoch_7@hotmail.com if you are interested. You will be amazed how your life improves by this sharing! One of the main purposes of the Mitzvah of Hearing the Torah on Shabbat Morning is to receive the Metaphysical Energy we will need during the next week. Please strive to hear the Torah Reading each week for this benefit. Kol Tuuv Chanoch Ben Yaacov |
