Week of September 20, 2009 Shabbat Shuvah,HaAzinu 5770 | |

This Shabbat we have the reading of Ha'azinu which is thought of as the song of the Torah. We also have a special name called Shabbat Shuva. This Shabbat Shuva falls during the 10 days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. As such it represents the energy of Tshuva which we are doing for the whole month of Elul and even the last part of Av. Why is it called by a particular name - the name Shuva? I will let you answer this for yourself. One hint is Manifestation is the end of a process or a beginning of a new one. The parasha has 52 verses and the code word is Kalev כלב. Kalev is a name of a person in the Torah as well as the Hebrew word for canine or dog. It also can be permuted to become BaChol which means "in all" or in everything. Another way of hearing it is "all 2", which would imply the unity of spiritual and physical. There is a Kabbalistic meaning to 52 as well. It is a number associated with the full spelling out of the Tetragramaton with Hay(s) like this .יוד הה וו .. .הה The Tetragramaton can be spelled a number of different ways. When it is spelled like the above it has a Gematria of 52 and is usually considered the spelling of this name in the Spherah of Malchut. Hazinu is usually the last reading prior to Simchat Torah and in that connection is considered Malchut. Yet in actuallity it is the first Parasha of the New Year. HOw can we understand this paradox? The answer to this resides in the understanding of what takes place the first night of Rosh HaShana. We all run out of energy - most people call this death. We don't see everybody fall over dead because our physical world is an illusion. Then we receive our new energy for the Chagim. Since we are now a NEW vessel, we must go through the process of maturity which enables us to be able to handle the energy for the year. This is the 22 days of Chagim which culminate during Simchat Torah. This is when we receive the energy called Surrounding Light for the whole year. It is within this surrounding Light called Ohr Makif tthat determines what happens to us. Our job during the year is to reveal as much of this Ohr Makif within our vessel. In short we transform Ohr Makif into Ohr Penimi - internal Light. Haazinu is generally considered one of the most concealed Torah portions. In fact the ARI asks 9 different questions about the choice of words and tense and gender of these words. They are: 1. Verse 1 What is the difference between "Hear" and to give ear"? 2.Verse 1 - In the first clause Moshe uses the imperative while in the second clause he uses the future tense. Why? 3. Why does Moshe say "i shall speak" in the first clause but does not say "I shall talk" in the second? 4. Why phrase things "the talk of my mouth" rather than my talk in verse 2? 5. Why does he mention dew with the verb to flow and rain with the verb to drip. One would expect the opposite? 6. He also uses 2 different expressions referring to Torah - one is my teaching and the other my talk. Why the difference? 7. In Verse 3 what is the meaning of "give greatness to God". Why not say "utter the greatness of God"? 8. Verse 4 - Why did he say "the Rock his action is perfect" rather than God's way is perfect. especially as King DAvid did say this in Psalms? 9. One would expect the terms "no corruption in god's ways" and "a steadfaxt God" to be in inverse order. What do we learn from this order? These 9 questions only cover the first 4 verses. To answer these questions would take too long for this email, i am just trying to give you a sense of the concealment. During this reading, (it is easiest during Hagba (raising of the Torah)) make sure you see the scroll itself. The viewing of these 52 verses is unique. They form 2 columns of 3 shapes each. The Kabbalist describe these as the 2 Triangles that make up the Shield of David commonly referred to as the Magan David or Star of David. Viewing this shape will act as a protection shield (the Hebrew word Magen means shield which is a form of protection in a physical war and this shape is a protection in your spiritual war being fought during these 10 days of Awe as well.) There is a relationship between Haazinu which means Listen (relating to the level of the consciousness of Binah (understanding)) and Yom Kippur. That relationship is simply the knowledge that Yom Kippur is the purification of the Jewish nation. Yom Kippur is what relieves us all that we have done wrong and sets us up for a better year - in fact, in can be the best possible year that we envision. All it takes is certainty. Please read my earlier emails about the difference between certainty and belief. Please take a moment to understand this difference and how to apply it to this teaching. Certainty for me is To know that HaShem loves us, HaShem is merciful, HaShem wants to give us everything good. That goodness is the cosmic Binah which is only available to us on this day of Yom Kippur. The cosmic Binah is the cosmic Mikvah - purification of the Jewish nation. Does this mean i don't have to do the spiritual work? NO it means that when you try to do your spiritual work, HaShem provides Yom Kippur to assist you in acheiving that purification. Once you are purified by the essence of Yom Kippur than you can reach in to the energy store known as Binah and receive the energy to accomplish all of your desires during this coming year. All you need to do is have the Kavenot - the intention to share with other people and to help correct the world by correcting yourself. This means changing yourself by transforming the desire to receive for oneself alone into the desire to receive in order to share.this is the central knowledge of the Torah. It only works when one has the certainty that it works. To the extent you have certainty - even only 2% of the potential of certainty is the extent that your dreams and aspirations come true. Otherwise you are only playing out the movie of your life. To change that movie one needs to do restriction with certainty. I refer you to my class recordings on Kabbalah to truly understand this truth. The parasha Haazinu is the jump start to that day called Yom Kipurrim (a day like Purim - see the Holiday of Purim recordings to understand this teaching). It almost always appears on this Shabbat before Yom Kippur. There is one more secret to learn to assist you in reaching that level of cosmic Binah. During the 10 days of Awe - between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur there is only one 7 day week. There is one Sunday, one Monday, one Tuesday etc. The actions that we take during this Sunday impact and affect each of the Sundays of the coming year. The actions that we take during this Monday impact and affect each of the Mondays of the coming year. What does this mean? It means if you do a little more spiritual actions (more Torah study, more Tephilah, More Tzedakah, visiting the sick, treating people with more human dignity, having more awareness of the needs of other people) and Tshuvah during these days than your year ahead will be impacted by these actions to be spiritually more active and therefore more beneficial to you than last year. Of course, the opposite is true. Have family quarrels, take the extra stress of preparing for the Chagim out on the family, being into yourself, allowing yourself to feel depressed and down during these days will impact your year in these ways. The choice is yours! Hope you all acheive what you want. I hope you all will join me in our dream to bring the Mashiach during this year of tesha.Have a beautiful Shabbat! Have a beautiful year!
