Week of April 26, 2009 Shabbat Acherai Mot Kedushim,Iyar 8, 5769 | |
---|---|
This week we again have a double portion. The Names of which are very meaningful. The first portion is Acharai Mot or "After Death". The second is Kedoshim which means "Holy" in the Plural Form. We can learn a great spiritual lesson from this concept of "After Death we become Holy". Ultimately the greatest gift HaShem gives us is immortality or "Death will be Swallowed Up Forever"! Why do we have to die to become Holy? Can not we strive to bring Holiness into our lives during our Lifetime which ultimately leads to a level where there is an End to Death. HOw is this achieved? Since Kabbalah teaches that everything depends on consciousness then to acheive the End of Death we have to think that it is possible. This is the first step in removing death. This is the first step which we learn from the Juxtaposition of these two Parashiot. Are you a person who needs to see it in order to believe it? or are you someone who can think it into being and "seeing" becomes the effect. Join me in that consciousness please! Use this reading to bring about immortality. Acharai Mot has 80 Verses and the Sages give us 2 codeworks. Caf Yood Caf lamed and Ayin Dalet Vav. Ayin Dalet Vav translates as "His Witness". The first code word means Ki - a connecting word like because, when, for, or that. Kol means everything or all. 80 is also the Gematria of the letter Pey which is also the word Mouth. The essence of this portion is Everything including immortality comes because of our mouths. Are you doing your part in learning the Halacha of Loshon HaRah. Have you learned that evil speech is saying the truth as well as falsehoods? There are 64 verses in Kedoshim. The code words are Mi Zahav which translates as "Who is Golden?" Coincidently (there are no co incidence) the Golden Rule - Veahavta LeRayacha Camocha - "Love Your Neighbor AS Yourself" is written into this Parasha. I will leave you to consider how the Golden Rule is connected to our Mouths? So what do we learn about the essence of this reading from the 144 verses being read. When spelled Mem Koof Dalet it translates as "From Fineness". Where does Fineness come from. The purity of precious metals is considered Fineness but Purity does not produce Holyness. Holyness takes an outside force like HaShem to lift one up to the higher level known as Holyness when one has already purified oneself. Are you doing this spiritual work to acheive Purity? I would also like to leave you with one other question. We live in a society that seems to be in conflict over sexual morality. Wheather it is Adultery, Homosexuality, or Masturbation (which the medical profession says is healthy for a single person while Torah asks one to limit this). In Chapter 18 (in Acharai Mot) we list forbidden sexual relations; in Chapter 20 (in Kedoshim) we list the effects of these forbidden relationships. It would take less words and letters if we put them together. We have a tradition that there is no extra word or letter in the Torah - so Why does the Torah seperate the Forbidden from the Effect (some people perceive this as punishments - which it is not)? I don't have an adequate answer to this question yet and hope some of you will write me with your perceptions. One answer i propose is HaShem knows our Human Follies and therefore wants us to realize that it is not about the other people doing these actions and me being self righteous and pointing fingers which many people in our society are doing. it is about policing our own actions not the other persons actions. This is why HaShem seperated these actions and the effects of these actions. One other point to be aware of. In the portion of Kedoshim there are 70 Mitzvoth listed. There are 70 Nations in our world. Many of our sages teach that the purpose of the Mitzvoth is to connect to HaShem and in that connection cleanse or purify ourselves until we reach the highest possible level which is "To LOve My Neighbor AS Myself". Even the Nations have a purpose in HaShem's Plan. So who is my Neighbor? HaShem? The Nations? My Spouse? or Myself? Shabbat Shalom chanoch P. S.
