This Shabbat our Torah Reading starts a New Sefer or Book. This is the reason that we had 3 double portions in the last month, in order to have the reading of Bamidbar just prior to Shavuot and the reading of Naso just after Shavuot. We will need to understand what is Shavuot to understand what is the essence of the Parasha of Bamidbar.
The Holiday of Shavuot "commemorates" the giving of the Torah. In Kabbalah there is no such thing as doing an action because of a Spiritual Law. Therefore we do not "do" because of an historical event. Kabbalah teaches that the event happens on a certain day because the energy of the day (the spiritual essence of the day) causes that event to have occured in World History.
The Holiday of Shavuot is the revelation of the Light of God known as the Esser Debrot. You know them. they are "I am God Your God. Do not Murder. Do not steal. Do not commit Adultery. etc.
The essence of that revelation which occured 50 days after leaving Egypt was/is to "swallow up death forever".
The ARI teaches that it is GUARANTEED that if one stays up the whole night of Shavuot and studies Kabbalah according to a specific order (given in his writings) one's life will be "death" free until Rosh HaShana (conservative reading of his words) or the whole year (liberal reading of his words). Is one nights sleep worth sacrificing on the "chance" that he is correct and you can live "death" free for 4 months of the year?
So we learn that the "giving" of the Torah on Shavuot was really the revelation of "immortality". Death became extinct. - - - - - except that it takes 1 cosmic hour to manifest the decrees of heaven on earth ( a spiritual law). One cosmic hour is 40 days.
What happened in those 40 days --- the sin of the Golden Calf. and thus we must wait for our second chance to manifest the removal of death and the revelation of immortality until a later time. Yet Hashem in his mercy gives us 4 months a year to have that opportunity.
Now to return to the Parasha. The Shabbat before a Holiday has the energy of the Holiday within it (in a potential way). This means that when the Parasha of Bamidbar is read it has the energy of removing death and revealing immortality.
There are 159 (???) verses in the Parasha. 159 spells the word katan which translates as small. The sages also give us a code word which is ??????. The last three letters spell one of the names of HaShem which is an incomplete spelling of the Tetragramaton. This particular Name is used in the Kavenot of Sukot which relates to Mercy. The first three letters of this code word is a Shoresh or root that has a number of meanings like smooth, straight, divide, split, seperate, partition, distribute, plot.
Do you see the connection to Immortality?
Lets look at the story to understand what this code word is teaching. The story begins with the concept of counting the Children of Israel by Tribes and Families. The essence of this Parasha is in the first Verse. (This is usually the case in all Parashiot).
The Parasha continues with the story about a census taking of the 12 Tribes without including the Levites and a description of how the Jews marched while in the dessert (Please see below for a revelation about this), followed by a description of the Levites and their appointment to the post of work in the Temple and their replacing/redemption of the first born in that work, followed by a census of one of the 3 parts of the Tribe of Levi - The Kohaites."
Returning to the verses cited above.
Yet the first Letter of the Parasha (after a space of 4 lines of No Text (White Space - no writing) (which indicates a new book)) is a Vav. Our teachings tell us that this indicates we have a connection to the last part of the previous Parasha.
The last sentence reads "These are the Mitzvot that HaShem commanded Moshe to the Children of Israel on Mount Sinai." The first verse of Bamidbar is "Hashem spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after thier exodus from the Land of Egypyt saying:"
What is the relationship between the Desert of Sinai and the Mountain of Sinai? Why was the Torah given in a desert and also on a mountain?
When one answsers these questions one will begin to understand the essence of this Parasha.
The desert is a Home to the animals called Snakes and Scorpions. The Mekubalim teach us that the desert is the home of the Satan (not the western society Satan) but the guy HaShem put in charge of providing us free choice.
In the Talmud there is a term called Hefker which does not translate easily. In the Talmud it means abandoned property. It also means free and open.
The desert is Hefker. That means we have to be free and open to all aspects of our perception. We have to be willing to learn from our physical world around us as well as seeing it as the illusion that it is. To paraphrase the words of the Baal HaTurim One needs to be free and open to all or one can not utilize the Mitzvoth to acheive what they are meant to acheive - Closeness to HaShem. One can not stop another from following thier path to HaShem and expect to be able to use your path to HaShem.
To paraphrase the words of Rabbi AShlag. The majority only has the right to impose its will upon the minority when it has given free rein to the growth and potential of the minority to become the majority. Until we work within out society to manifest this understanding it will be difficult to manifest immortality.

In Chapter 3 verse 19 there are 5 dots over the letters of "and Ahron". When ever we have dots over a word in the scroll it indicates a special spiritual law that we need to understand. In my opinion, these dots indicate a connection of pregnancy in the relationship between Moshe and Aaron which is ultimately manifests as immortality.
