Week of May 22, 2011Shabbat Bamidbar,Iyar 24, 5771 | |
---|---|
This week the Parasha of Bamidbar במדבר is read. Midbar is the Hebrew word for desert or wilderness. The translation can be "In the wilderness" or In a wilderness". It is the first Parasha in the book of Numbers. The reason this fourth Book of Moshe is called Numbers is because it starts by counting or taking a census of the Children of Israel. In Hebrew it is called "Wilderness" or Bamidbar. In the first verse, the Torah talks about the desert of Sinai while the Torah is given on the Mountain of Sinai. In the Parasha of Behar i mentioned that we would discuss the question of the difference between Desert and Mountain. We will do so below because this question relates directly to the essence of this Parasha. Here is a link for a cartoon summary of the Parasha. We hope you enjoy it. Torah Readings: Bamidbar - Numbers Chapter 1 Verse 1 to Chapter 4 Verse 20. There are 159 Verses which, by gematria, is the word קנט. This word can be translated as floorboard or finished edges. When permutated it means Katan which means small or immature. As a verb it means dwindling, or diminishing. This all relates to the spiritual teaching that when something is counted it no longer is able to hold the spiritual essence of Blessing within it. The code word from the Sages חלקיהו which means Part of Yood Hay Vav, or His Part of Yood Hay. There is also a connection to Kabbalah in this code word as follows: Also the word Kabbalah (which means receiving) has a Gematria of 137. When the Colel is added to this it becomes 138 indicating the actual receiving. This code word connection can then be translated as Receiving Yood Hay Vav. The part of the Tree of Life that receives Yood Hay Vav is the lower Hay of the Tetragramaton or Malchut the physical world. To explain this more clearly. The code words always have the Gematria equal to the No of verses. This week the no of verses is 159. If we subtract 21 for the Yood Hay Vav we have 138 left. This is the word Kabbala with the Colel as explained above. There are 1823 words in the Parasha. This can be seen as אתתכג or אכגף. The second word can be translated as "Like 1 wing or limb" when the word is permutated. The first word can be permutated into "your winepress" along with the direct object in Hebrew Et. Like את גתך.This information teaches us that 1 wing is not sufficient. We need to receive the Torah both on the mountain and in the desert. Also we need to have joy when we receive the Torah as indicated by the concept of wine press. Maftir:Chapter 4 Verses 17 - 20. There are 4 verses and 1 space. We have discussed the meaning of 4 and 1 in prior emails. Spaces: There are 30 spaces in the Parasha. 30 relates to the Hebrew letter Lamed through its Gematria. This letter also is a word that means teacher. The number of spaces is hinting at the connection between Zeir Anpin (the vav of the Tetragramaton) and Binah (the upper Hay of the Tetragramaton) because the lamed is the only letter that goes above the line making a connection to a higher spiritual level. Haftara: The Haftara is the same for the Sephardim and Ashkenazim. It is read from Hosea Chapter 2 Verses 1 to 22.This is a total of 22 verses with 3 spaces. Please note the 3 spaces relates to the 3 columns of the Tree of Life while the 22 verses relates to the 22 letters of the Aleph Bet. Written and Spoken Verses: There is 1 word in the Parasha spoken differently than it is written while there are no words like this in the Haftara. The word is in Chapter 1 Verse 16. It is written קריאי while it is spoken קרואי. In the spoken form it means "I summoned". In the written form it can be translated as "My cold 11" (far from Hashem). This is hinting at the tourists that went into the Land as spies. Actually only 10 of these were "cold". Perhaps the 11th was Caleb who prayed for assistance at/from the graves of the Patriarchs. Or perhaps it was Joshua who had not yet had his name changed by Moshe. The Sages have not made this clear. Large or Small Letters: There are no large or small letters in the Haftara or the Parasha. There are 5 dots over the word "and Aaron" in Chapter 3 Verse 39. These dots teach us that Aaron and his sons are not being included in the counting of the Tribe of Levy. Columns: All columns start with a Vav. There are 5 full columns and 2 partial columns. Before i discuss the Haftara i would like to discuss the essence of the Parasha. Please look at the last verse in last weeks portion of Bechukotai and compare it to the first verse in this weeks Parasha of Bamidbar. In last week's Parasha the last 2 words refers to Behar Sinai, while in this weeks Parasha it refers to Bamidbar Sinai. What is Behar and what is Bamidbar and what is the difference? Behar is usually translated as "on a mountain". Bamidbar is usually translated as "in the wilderness or desert". Of course the simple understanding is that a mountain is something that we climb to get higher physically, while a wilderness is a place of little rainfall. The assumption by most people is that the Mountain of Sinai is within the Desert of Sinai! But is that a true statement? Lets permute the two words to get deeper insights into these questions. בהר (Behar) = on a or the mountain depending on the vowels under the Bet. הבר = the son (Aramaic) - the grain (Hebrew) בר = pure or undomesticated, open areas, field רבה = multiply, increase, grow, great רב = great, much, enough, Teacher, Spiritual Guideרהב = haughtiness, bragging, proud, to dare,to boast במדבר (Bamidbar) = "in a desert", "in the desert" depending on the vowel for the Bet. בם דבר ="thing or word in them" דבר = word or thing or matter, to destroy, to talk,מדבר (midbar) = desert, wilderness, desolation, speaker, suppressor, eradicator, in question, topic of conversation, "from a word or thing". רבד = layer, stratum, stain, grease spot With in these permutations one is able to see the unity and similarity between Behar and Bamidbar. One understanding of the essence of the wilderness is that it is open and unlimited. One of the Sages teaches that the essence of this Parasha of Bamidbar is to be open and willing to learn. This is not like the haughtiness of a mountain. The Torah was given on a mountain but it is only when we are open to learn from it like the wilderness that we actually receive the Torah. Immediately after teaching this spiritual lesson in the first verse of the Parasha that we list the counting of the male population of the Tribes. This counting has the potential to limit the people counted. As a spiritual lesson always count with words or things and not directly. This applies to all things but especially people. As promised, this year i will give some insights into the Haftarot. This Haftara from Hosea is strange and esoteric. The physical connection, between the Parasha and Haftara, speaks about the countless numbers of the Jewish people. This comes in Chapter 2 Verse 1. Since we count the Children of Israel by Tribe in this Parasha the prophesy that we can not count them is connected. Actually the esoteric aspect of the Haftara relates to the essence of the Parasha. It is discussed below. Please note it is difficult to see but it is there. The essence of the Parasha is to be open and not allow oursleves to be limited by any counting. That is the message of the idea of wilderness vs mountain and it is also the essence of the first verse that precedes the potential limitation of the census itself. Also concealed in this Parasha is the essence of the First Born. The First Born was always to have the responsibility of being the Priest for thier Family. When the 10th plague happened in Egypt and the Egyptian First Born were killed, Hashem made Holy the first born of Israel. After the sin of the Golden Calf these first born potential Holy Priests had to be redeemed. This was accomplished by the ritual of the Levites redeeming the first born. It is in this way that the Levites became capable of being Priests. Of course we have to ask ourselves what is the purpose of these verses for me when i am not a Levi in this lifetime? We also must ask why are the Levites counted from the age of 1 month while the other Tribes are counted from the age of 20? I do not know the answer yet to these questions but i know they are important questions. I hope someone will send me their thinking as to this answer during the coming week. Also concealed in this Parasha is the wisdom of Hebrew Astrology. Most Rabbi's have difficulty with Hebrew Astrology due to the following logical syllogism. If Astrology works then everything is predestined to be. If everything is predestined then why should i strive to become a better person. Why should i give charity and take care of the poor and destitute or even stay married to one women when what is predestined is going to happen anyway. Kabbalah does reconcile these contradictions of everything is predestined and yet we still have free choice and that free choice does create cause and effect. This email is not long enough to explain these concepts so i suggest you listen to class 5 of the basic classes that are on my website. www.yeshshem.com. Class 5 is in the Revealed Wisdom section. So how does this Parasha give us information about Astrology? Lets ask the questions Why are there 12 signs of the Zodiac? Why do i need to know the Tribal order of the Children of Israel as they marched in the Desert? Why did Jacob have 14 Sons (the expected 12 plus Menashe and Ephraim) ? How do i relate Jacob's 14 sons to the 12 signs of the Zodiac? Here are some quick answers without explanation or justification. I want you to think about these answers and look within yourself to intuit if they are filled with truth. . . or not? There are 12 signs of the Zodiac because 12 is 4 times 3. The 4 represents the Tetragramaton and the 3 represents The Tetragramaton on the Right, The Tetragramaton on the Left, and The Tetragramaton of balance in the Center. The tribal order of March is not a historical discussion. It is showing us the relationship between the Zodiac and the Tribes. The flags or Degelim shows us the relationship to the seasons as part of Hebrew Astrology. The location of the Tribes being in what direction relative to the Ark (East, North, and South) are describing certain astrological influences. The original 12 sons of Jacob have 1 relationship to the Zodiac while the 12 Tribes which include Efraim and Menashe and exclude Levi and Joseph have another relationship to the Zodiac. In essence Hebrew Astrolgoy teaches that eveything is predestined yet this destiny can be changed by our actions. So we do have free will and at the same time we do have everything predestined as well. The question is what movie have we chosen to live within. We can always choose to change the movie that we are in and all of those potential movies are built into the initial birth chart of a person. Learning about Hebrew Astrology and knowing what potential movies we can have to live within Hebrew Astrology is about. In essence learning the potential Tzadik or Tzadeket that you can become is the tool and the gift that is available in Hebrew Astrology. Are you ready to expand your consciousness and become all that you can become? Do you want to learn about Hebrew Astrology? Or do you just want to know how to read your own chart?
