|Week of November 16, 2008 Shabbat Chayai Sarah Cheshvan 24, 5769|
This weeks portion should be called (Has V'Shalom) the death of Sarah but instead it is called Chayai Sarah (The life of Sarah). In the second verse their is a small letter CAf in the word that translates as bewails or mourns. In essence the Small Letter Caf and the name of the parasha allude to its essence. The essence is "less is more". This is a spiritual law that applies to the physical world.
If one has less physicality than one has more spirituality and then one will be happy with ones life. True or False?
There are 105 verses in the Parasha and the codeword is YehuYeda or Yood Hay Vav Yood Daled Ayin. This full name is used today as a name of someone. It actually breaks into two words. Yood Hay Vav (The spritual aspects of HaShem) and Yood Dalet Ayin which means knowledge. So the meaning of the number of verses is The knowledge of Hashem or HaShem Knows! This alludes to the question i asked above. Less Physical means more spiritual and more joy in one's life. Of course completely less physical means homelessness and that is not a Jewish value. There are many other relationships to this number 105 including the sum of 14. 14 means Yad or hand. and it is a number relating to manifestation. Sarah Lived 127 years and she manifested her life well. In fact so well that Queen Esther returned as the reincarnation of Sarah Imeinu. In that lifetime she became the mother of King Darius of Persia who authorized the rebuilding of the Temple.
The major part of the Portion deals with the search, finding, and intoduction of Rivka and Issac. The unusual aspect of this - at least for Torah - The story is repeated 3 times with only minor changes in the words. The tradition explains that there is no letter in the Torah that is wasted. The Sages ask the question as to why the story needed to be repeated in this way with the appearance of so many extraneous letters. Of course they are not extraneous. The explanation would take too long for this email even if i truly understood the reason why the story of Issac and Rebecca and Eliezer needs to be repeated when we realize the metaphor of these 3 people represent the Body, Soul, and Yetzer HaTov after the Meshiach manifests.
The last part of the Portion describes the other children of Avraham and Ketorah. The midrash explains that Ketorah is Hagar after she has done Tshuvah. Another Midrash explains that Hagar was a princess/daughter of Pharoh of Egypt. I find a spiritual lesson in this information. Hagar is a Name and can also be read as "the Ger". Ger can mean both a "convert" and "stranger". In the frame of reincarnation a Ger is a Nefesh soul that is reincarnating with a Ruach and/or Neshamah that is not the same person as the Nefesh. This occurs when a Nefesh soul does not complete its Tikune at all levels in its first incarnation. Ketorah like Ketoret means "to get closer to HaShem". The spiritual lesson from this relationship indicates that one of the paths to get closer to Hashem is to be a stranger to the Narrow places (meaning of the word Egypt) of the Physical World.
