Week of August 1, 2011 Shabbat Devarim, Av 6, 5771 | |
---|---|
This week the name of the Parasha is Devarim spelled דברים. This is usually translated as Words yet we might translate it as "Sea of Word" or "word sea" or even more unusual "sea thing". Why do i give you all of these translations that seem so unrelated? It is to allow you to realize that the Torah has 70 faces (understandings and meanings) and we can see them all if we just open ourselves to the possibility to see it! Devarim is always read prior to Tisha B'Av. The day of many calamities but also the birth date of the Mashiach. Before we discuss Devarim lets look at some interesting aspects of the 3 weeks and about America. Learn more about the 3 week period at the links below: 3 week Period and Easy Fast Meditation for 17th of Tammuz and 9th of Av Do you want to know what America stands for in the spiritual worlds. First, know that the Declaration of Independance was signed on July 4 1776 which is 17th of Tammuz in the year 5536. As we know we are not supposed to start anything new in the 3 week period because the negative forces are involved with anything new that starts during this period. America started during the 3 week period. What else can we learn? 5536 is spelled תקלו in Hebrew. One of the attributes associated with this word is "His active simple light". These are the values of America in the spiritual worlds. "His active simple light" which is a good thing and carrying around the negative system as it is always attached to something new that starts during the 3 weeks. The 17th Day of Tammuz is a day of dual energy. 17th is Tov or Good. Yet the actions of human beings in building the Golden Calf injected negativity into this goodness. This is the duality mentioned above. Here is our weekly cartoon link for the Parasha. Here is a link for a cartoon summary of the Parasha. We hope you enjoy it. Torah Readings: The reading of the Parasha is Devarim Chapter 1 Verse 1 to Chapter 3 Verse 22. The total number of Verses is 105. This is spelled קה in Hebrew. This word does not have any meaning in Hebrew. A common substitute for the Koof in Kabbalistic writings is to change the word קה to עלה which means "to go up"; to ascend; to rise; The number 105 is also the sum of the numbers from 1 to 14. 14 comes from the concept of Hand or Yad in Hebrew. This word is connected to Malchut very closely in Kabbalah. This is because Malchut and our Hand(s) deal with manifestation. The code word from the Sages is מלכיה which translates as God is King. The number of words in the Parasha is 1548 spelled אתקמח. This is translated as "all of the energy of the 22 letters powdered", or "concealed". This is the energy that is needed on the Shabbat prior to Tisha B'Av. Maftir: The Maftir is Chapter 3 Verses 20 to 22. This is 3 Verses and 1 space. This has been discussed many times before. Spaces: There are 5 spaces in this Parasha. This relates to the energy of all of the worlds. One of these spaces is quite unique. In Chapter 2 verse 8 the space is in the middle of the verse. The Kabbalists teach us that when traveling through this space we jump ahead 38 years - from the Exodus to just before we enter the Land. In other words we traveled in time. Once something is done we know that we can do it again. Do you want to know how to travel in Time? Join our Sefer Yetzirah class on Mondays at 7 PM Pacific time. Want a hint? Ask yourself why all traditions in Judaism say the Barich Shemay verses from the Zohar prior to removing the Torah from the Ark prior to reading the Torah from the Scroll. Haftara: The Haftara is read from Chapter 1 verses 1 to 27 of Isaiah. There are 27 verses and 4 spaces. The Shabbat is called by a special name after the first word of the Haftara. The word is Chazon which means vision. The Haftara consists of a vision that Isaiah received of the destruction of the Temple. This vision is a vaccine to protect us from destroying the Temple yet again. This means that our actions can always make things worse. The vision of Isaiah acting as a vaccine helps protect us from making it worse until we do the Tshuvah to rebuild the Temple by learning to treat people with Human Dignity and removing "Hatred for no reason from our Hearts". Why are there 27 verses? 27 is the gematria of the Hebrew word for purity Zach. Purity is a step on the expanded consciousness path of spirituality. We start out in an impure state of consciousness and then through our free will actions we transform that into a state of purity and then to a state of Holiness. What are you doing to become pure? This Haftara can assist you in reaching a state of purity. To become pure you must start with you "seeing" yourself as you are! 27 is also the energy of the total of all of the Hebrew Letters, the 22 basic letters plus the 5 final letters. Written and Spoken Verses: There is one word written and spoken differently in the Parasha. It is the word son written in the singular and spoken in the plural (sons) in Chapter 2 Verse 33. Rashi teaches that while this verse is talking about the victory over Sihon and his sons, only one of his sons (unnamed) is worthy of mention in the Torah. There are no words in the Haftara that are written and spoken differently. Large or Small Letters and Dots: There are no Large or Small letters or dots in this Parasha or Haftara. Columns: All columns start with a Vav There are 4 full columns and 2 partial columns in the Parasha. As promised, this year i will give some insights into the Haftarot. The Haftara is Chapter 1 of the Book of Isaiah. Isaiah prophesized to the people of Judah for 86 years. Why 86? To connect to the natural course of things. 86 is the gematria of two Hebrew words; Elokim which is the attribute of God dealing with judgment; Nature which is the set of physical laws Hashem created to implement his system of judgment. We learn from this, that if we do not change ourselves then the natural cause and effect system of nature will manifest. In this prophecy Isaiah says if you make empty sacrifices (only surface level but not heart felt) the effect will be the destruction of the Temple, but Hashem will always redeem you if YOU RETURN TO HASHEM (Do Tshuvah)! Have you returrned to God? Do you even know how? We have 7 weeks of Tshuvah potential (of course, someone is welcome to do Tshuvah at any time not just now) as will be explained in the upcoming 7 weeks before Rosh HaShana. The next seven weeks Haftara are also from Isaiah. They are referred to as the Haftarot of Comfort. Don't be comforted unless you return to Hashem, Then the comfort will be truly overwhelming! Now lets look at the lessons in the Parasha. On the surface, the Parasha appears to be recounting the History of the nation in the desert. it is much more than this. The opening words are "these are the words that Moshe spoke to all the people of Israel". Lets look at what some of the sages say about the beginning words which are "These are the words". The midrash says these are the words that Moshe waited 40 years to admonish the Nation. This leads to a great spiritual lesson! Why did Moshe wait 40 years to speak these words of admonition to the nation? To make sure that he was speaking from love and not from his own hurt ego. Could you wait 40 years to tell your wife Honey i am hurt that you did not treat me with due respect when you spoke to your friends about me? My mother taught me a great lesson that is consistant with this lesson of this Parasha. She always said "Do not go to bed angry, make peace before you sleep. Otherwise the anger festers." The sages teach wait 3 days before you speak to the one who hurt you about your hurt and pain. Others say wait till after the next Shabbat. All of these people are teaching the following spiritual lesson: Words spoken from pain lead to pain. Words spoken from the consciousness of "what is best for the other person" lead to human dignity and peace. Let me explain a spiritual truth by asking a question. Why is it ever important to tell someone he hurt you? Can you give me an example of when it is truly important? I truly want to know! Mostly telling someone "you hurt me" is never important except it makes your own ego feel better. That is not a good reason to admonish someone who hurt you. When is it good to admonish someone who hurt you? Lets see what the Torah teaches. Moshe says it is important to admonish someone when 1. they will hear your admonishment and 2. you truly want what is best for the person being admonished. Always remember the words you say to others are actually meant for you to hear. MAYBE YOU ARE THE ONE WHO NEEDS TO ACCEPT YOUR ADMONISHMENT. Remember, the upper courts use your words as the judgement against yourself. Is this admonishment you can not wait to say really for the other person or should you be listening to these words yourself. One final secret to be revealed this year. Moshe started speaking (per the Midrash) on rosh Chodesh Sivan and left the world on Zion Adar - 37 days later. Why 37? Moshe is teaching us that every revelation of wisdom has two components. One is revealed and one concealed. This will take some explaining. When we say the Name of God in 4 letters (Yood Hay Vav Hay) - we actually say 10 letters. This is so because Kabbalah teaches see each letter through the name of the letter. For example: Yood becomes Yood Vav Dalet; Hay becomes Hay Yood; Vav becomes Vav Aleph Vav; Hay becomes Hay Yood. Count the number of letters in the fullfilled name (this is the letters spelled out with the name of the letter. Kabbalah calls this the fulfilled name). There are 10 with a total of 63 Gematria. 10 plus 63 is 73 the gematria of Chochmah (wisdom). 63 is composed of 26 (gematria of the Tetragramaton) and 37 the gematria of the concealed (the letters from the name of the letters that are not the initial letters) fulfilled letters. For Example the letter Yood is Yood. The name of the letter Yood is Yood Vav Dalet. Yood is the revealed letter that is the first letter of the name of the letter. Vav and Dalet are the concealed letters from the name of the letter Yood. Wisdom only comes through the complete structure of 10 sephirot and consists of the revealed and concealed aspects.
