|Week of March 8, 2009 Shabbat Ki Tisa,Adar 18 5771|
This Parasha is Ki Tisa! It is the Parasha describing the Golden Calf! It is the Parasha describing the Gift of Shabbat! It is the Parasha describing the 13 Attributes of Mercy. It is also the Shabbat Para - the Shabbat of the Heifer.
There are 122 verses in this portion and the code word is Sameck Nun Vav Aleph Hay. This word comes from the Shoresh that also means Coercian or Forced or Driven Out (in order to be brought to safety). The number 122 has the same Gematria as Hasadim which relates to the plural of Mercy.
There are 3 unusual items in this portion. One is one of those columns that start with something other than a Vav. In this case it starts with the Shin of Bet Yood Hay Shin Mem Vav. This is situated between the Large Noon of Nozer (Preserver) and the Large Resh of the word Achar which means Other. The two Letters together spell NeR which means candle. I suggest you read this section quite closely as there are many secrets associated with these two letters in the words expressed such as use the Candle to protect oneself from the Preserver of the Other Chiefs.
Finally there is an amazing learning associated with the 13 Attributes of Mercy. The teaching is simple. Any time one needs forgiveness from HaShem - sing the 13 Attributes. Do not say them unless you are in a Minyan at the time. Sing them anytime and at least once perday - preferably during Mincha.
The essence of this Parasha is our need for Mercy to Forgive our actions!
The Maftir read this Shabbat is the special Maftir for the Shabbat called Shabbat Parah. The Shabbat is one of the 4 Shabbatot leading up to the Month of Nissan. They are called Shabbat Shekelim, Shabat Zachor, Shabbat Parah, and Shabbat HaChodesh. Finally there is Shabbat HaGadol which is the Shabbat before Pesach.
On Shabbat Parah we read about the Ashes of the Red Heifer which Purify's the nation from the energy of Tumah (uncleanliness) associated with the strongest level of Tumah - Death. At the same time these ashes and ritual purify the Nation they make the Priest Tamay ( Impure). This paradox is why this Mitzvah is called a Hok - a law that Humans can not understand. Actually we read this section of the Torah twice a year and both times we have the opportunity to cleanse ourselves of the Tumah associated with Death. Don't you think it important to come to Synagogue to Hear the Torah on those two Shabbats - One of which is this Shabbat - Shabbat Parah!
Enjoy the reading!
