Week of Februay 13, 2011 Shabbat Ki Tisa, 15 Adar 5771 | |
---|---|
This week the Parasha of Ki Tisa כי תשה is read. Here is a link for a cartoon summary of the Parasha. We hope you enjoy it. Torah Readings: Exodus Chapter 30 Verse 11 to Chapter 34 Verse 35. There are 122 Verses which, by gematria, is קכב. This word can be translated as "like empty". The code word from the sages is סנואה which has no direct meaning in Hebrew or Aramaic. In permuting the letters the word can be translated as "rape of the physical world". This is what is the effect of the building of the Golden Calf which happens in this weeks Parasha. There are 2002 באב words in the Parasha. This word means 2 fathers. This also relates to the Golden Calf in which the People were looking for a second leader (channel to HaShem - to replace Moshe who they thought had died on the Mountain with Hashem). Maftir: Exodus Chapter 34 Verses 33 to 35. There are 3 verses and 1 space. Spaces: There are 8 spaces in the Parasha. 8 is the number associated with the Sephirah of Binah called "The Energy Store". This is the true energy of Shabbat as well. We receive the energy for the week from the actions we do during Shabbat. Haftara: Sephardim and Ashkenazim read different but similar Haftarot: The Ashkenazim read Kings Aleph Chapter 18 Verses 1 to 39, While the Sephardim read Chapter 18 Verses 20 to 39. The Ashkenazim read 39 verses which connects to the 39 types of work performed in the Temple. On Shabbat we are directed by Halacha to not do these types of work. The Sephardim read 20 verses connecting to the value of 20 Gerrar in a full Shekel and relate to the 1/2 Shekel which each person gave to the Mishkan and the Temple prior to the First of Nissan each year. Both of them (Ashkenazim and Sephardi readings) connect to only 1 space during this reading which comes at the end of the reading after Verse 39. Written and Spoken Verses: There are no words written one way and spoken another way in the Parasha while there is one word written and spoken differently in the Haftara. It is in Verse 36. The written and spoken word mean the same thing. It is translated as "by your word". The written word has an additional Yood connecting us to God's Name and confirming the truth of the statement made by Elijah the Prophet in this context. From the writings in this Haftara, It does not say that HaShem directly told Elijah to have this contest with the Propets of Baal. This Yood teaches that Hashem agreed with the actions of Elijah in this regard. Dots: There are no Dots over any letters in this Parasha or Haftara. Large or Small Letters: There are two large letters in reading of the Parasha. In Chapter 34 Verse 7 there is a large Noon in the word Netzar which is one of the 13 Attributes of mercy. Netzar means "preserver". The attribute is actually the "preserver of Kindness for thousand of generations". Also in verse 14 there is a large Resh in the word Achar, which means "other". Together they spell the word Ner which means candle and teach us about the Light of God being with us even in the darkness which is the effect of the building of the Golden Calf. Columns: All columns start with a Vav except the column that starts between the Large Noon and the Large Resh. This column starts with a Shin. When added to the large Noon and Resh (see above) it spells the word Nesher which then reminds us of the Central column because Nesher means Eagle. In the Prophets it teaches that there are 4 faces, one of which is an Eagle and the Kabbalists teach us that the Eagle represents central column. There are 5 complete columns and 2 partial columns. As promised, this year i will give some insights into the Haftarot. The physical story of the Haftara read by the Sephardim is dealing with idol worship and thus is easy to see both the physical and spiritual essence of the Haftara readings connection to the Parasha. What is not easy to understand is what is the reason for the additional verses read by the Ashkenazim dealing with the process that leads up to this confrontation between Elijah the Prophet and the King of Israel and the many false prophets of Baal. To understand the essence of the Parasha, is somewhat confusing. It is clearly a vaccine against idol worship. We get this understanding from the Golden Calf, yet there is so much more protection with the 13 attributes of Mercy and the Large Noon and Large Resh spelling Ner (candle). Also we have a connection to the Light of Shabbat within the Parasha. Also the giving of the 1/2 Shekel which we will read again in a few weeks. The 1/2 Shekel is also part of a protection shield that we receive this week. With all of these items of protection, we also receive the Ketoret (incense) information this week. I think that this is the essence of this Parasha, the Ketoret which comes from the Shoresh (root) which means "to get closer". I am going to take some time this week to explain some issues in dealing with animal sacrifice as this is an area that has become very misunderstood in our generation. It will also help us to understand what we have truly lost when the Temple was destroyed and also to understand the prophecies involved with the Building of the third Temple specifically relating to animal sacrifice. Most of what you will read below is my opinion from my own reading and is not specifically written in the Zohar or other Sages writings. If one views the Temple from above (a birds eye view) one realizes that the Temple is literally morre Holy the closer one gets to the middle of the Temple. In effect as one walks from the outside walls to the middle of the Temple (which is the Holy of Holies), each step towards the midddle that one takes is an additional step towards increased Holiness. The item that took place closest to the outside was the animal sacrifices. The item that was done the most near the Holy of Holies was the lighting of the incense which was done on the inner alter. There are 5 types of sacrifices that a person would bring to the Temple. The type of sacrifice depends on a persons financial ability. Animals were the most expensive and meal offerings the least with Birds being in the middle. The 5 types of offerings are Sin offerings, Burnt Offerings, Guilt Offerings, Peace Offerings, and other offerings including the Pesach and the First Born. These are also listed in order from least Holy to Most Holy. In the time of the Temple, people brought offerings which included animal offerings. These animals represent the personal sacrifice of the animal within them. The Talmud describes that the animals would line up to be sacrificed because they knew that was the reason for their creation. Even when they brought meal offerings it was still a metaphorical sacrifice of the animal within them. In the future time of the Third Temple, per my reading and understanding of the Prophets, there will be two levels of people. One level will still need to cleanse the animal within them and others will have already cleansed that and will not have to bring animal sacrifices. Also people will no longer be able to eat meat as was true in the generations prior to Noah. To explain the above statement. From Adam to Noah human beings were vegetarians. We did not eat meat. We were only given permission to eat meat when the generation of the flood reincarnated into animals (and lower) as a correction for the mistreating and abuse of animals that was the effect of our actions during the generation of the flood. (All of humanity was present in the generation of the flood just as all of us were present during the generation of the Desert after leaving Egypt.) When we eat meat, we ingest a lower level of consciousness into ourselves. This has an effect to lower our own level of consciousness. The only way to stop that from happening is to assist a soul to elevate from the animal level to the human level. This is why people were given permission to eat meat after the flood. What this means is that we will not have to have a location for animal sacrifices but will still need to bring meal offerings. Many people in our generation think that the third Temple will entail animal sacrifice and they put blockages in this building of the Third Temple based on this fear or concern. People should realize that they can bring meal offerings and that they will still need to sacrifice the animal in them but it will not have to be a real live animal from our world. Returning to the meaning of the Ketoret in this weeks Parasha. The Ketoret, uses 11 herbs and spices. The meaning of the number 11 is that it is 1 more than the 10 Sepherot. This meaning is that even the negative system is needed to get closer to the Creator. One of the spices actually smells horrible when it is burned. Yet this smell is concealed by the pleasure in the rest of the burning smells. What do we learn from this? Everything in our world is for the purpose of getting closer to the Creator. This means the pain and suffering is being used to bring us closer to the creator just as the pleasures we partake of in this world is also to bring us closer to the Creator. Why do we continue to resist getting closer to the Creator? I hope you enjoy your Torah study this week. It is truly awe inspiring! Kol Tuuv Shabbat Shalom chanoch P. S.
