Week of July 17, 2011 Shabbat Balak, Tammuz 21, 5771 | |
---|---|
This week the Parasha is named Matot spelled מטות. Matot means tribes and this Parasha starts out with unusual phrasing. Moshe did not speak directly to the Children of Israel, he spoke to the Heads of the Tribes. Lets look at these words "Heads of the Tribes". ראשי המטות. There are a few shoreshim (roots) that this word matot can come from. They are מטה which means rod, staff, tribe, or headquarters. Verbs that come from this shoresh are inclined, or leaning. Another Shoresh טוה is translated as to spin or to weave. Even a third Shoresh possibility is מוט which translates as to totter, to shake, or to collapse. The plural word of Rosh is Rashai. This is the second word of the unusual phrasing. Its translation is Heads can be translated in the singular as "My Head". For me the meaning of Heads of the Tribes is more meaningful when permutated to become "My head is leaning toward the end". Why this will become clear as you read below. Matot is always read during the 3 week negative period and is important to utilize its energy to protect us and become aware of the tools of the negative side. Learn more about the 3 week period at the links below. 3 week Period and Easy Fast Meditation for 17th of Tammuz and 9th of Av Here is our weekly cartoon link for the Parasha. Here is a link for a cartoon summary of the Parasha. We hope you enjoy it. Torah Readings: The reading of the Parasha is Numbers Chapter 30 Verse 2 to Chapter 32 Verse 42. The total number of Verses is 112. This is spelled קיב in Hebrew. It actually permutes into Yabok as in the River Yabok that Jacob crossed to retrieve some small trinket he forgot and found himself wrestling with the Angel of Edom. Yabok always implies unity of the 3 lowest worlds (creation, formation, and action, also known as Binah, Zeir Anpin, and Malchut in the names of the sephirot. Creation, Formation, and action in the names of the Worlds. This unification energy is necessary to combat the separation energy of the 3 week period. There are 3 code words from the Sages. בקי יקב and עיבל. The first translates as winepress or winery. The second as My emptiness. The third translates as "See my Heart". How these relate to the energy of the Parasha is somewhat concealed. The number of words in the Parasha is 1484 which translates as "cloak the 400 (negative aspects)". It is indicating that the Parasha is a vaccine against the negative 3 weeks. Maftir: The Maftir is Chapter 32 Verses 40 to 42. This is 3 Verses and 1 space. This has been discussed many times before. Spaces: There are 8 spaces in this Parasha. This relates to the energy of Binah which is referred to as the energy store. It is also the aspect above emotions which are so vulnerable during the month of Tammuz. Haftara: In most years the Haftara that is read is the reading from Matot which is Jeremiah Chapter 1 Verse 1 to Chapter 2 Verse 3. This is 22 verses and 5 spaces. Since this is being read during the 3 week period it needs to be a stronger connection to the Creator which is why it has the 5 spaces which connect to all 5 Books of Moshe - All of the energy of the Torah. 1. What is a vow - a Neder? 2. Why can a father or husband disavow a vow? 3. Why did the Tribes of Reuben and Gad not want to go into the land? We will answer these questions below and it will help us answer the essence of this Parasha. Although actually the essence of the Parasha is transmitted by the number of verses the unification of Binah, Zeir Anpin, and Malchut. All of the worlds being unified. In essence we receive the energy from this Parasha to unify the worlds and be able to see through the illusion of the negative three week period which starts on the 17th of Tammuz. As promised, this year i will give some insights into the Haftarot. Matot is always read during the month of Tammuz. This Haftara is also always read during the month of Tammuz, during the 3 week period. Jeremiah had one of the most difficult messages to give the Jewish Nation. This is because the nation felt vindicated by the Tshuvah that occurred during the rein of Josiah King of Yehudah who restored the Temple worship and sacrifice to its former glory. This let the nation think that eveything would be ok even as they participated in their own individual and family idol worship. The Nation is ok because of the Tshuvah. I don't have to concern myself with changing myself is what people thought and did. Does it sound like something familiar. The Haftara is Chapter 1 of Jeremiah, his seed level. It talks about an almond tree, a bubling pot, and God remembering the Nation in its youth. These 3 items like the word Yabok relates to the unity of Binah, Zeir Anpin and Malchut. Lets turn our attention to some amazing insights that we learn from the ideas expressed in this Parasha, as well as to answer the questions raised above. What is a vow? The word is Neder spelled Nun, Dalet, Resh. Most people think it is a reinforcement for an action someone has promised to perform. Yet look at the letters in the word. The Nun has the energy of falling. Dalet has the essence of opening a doorway. The Resh has two aspects - that of poorness and that of Head. What is the idea of a falling head. It is the body, controlled by constantly changing emotions. What is the idea of falling into poorness? Read below to understand more of what is a Neder. A neder is not a good thing. It is harmful to us. In fact the Torah does not require a vow from a witness except in unusual cases. This is why the Torah tells us to not utilize a vow except in certain circumstances. And then we must bring a sin offering for having taken the vow of a Nazir and other vows that the Torah does require. Why does the Torah allow a Male to disavow the vow of his daughter and some of the vows of his wife? Please understand this is not dealing with a Man Wife and Daughter. It is dealing with the code words relating to effect and a cause. The Male represents Cause and of course a cause can impact and change even disallow an effect represented by female energy. That of a wife and daughter. The Torah is teaching us (in the manner of free will) DO NOT TAKE A VOW! When you do so you receive the energy to accomplish that act. If God forbid you do not accomplish that action (of the vow you take) that energy goes to the other side but not until the energy is allowed to create blockages in your life first. It is not worth taking a vow it is better to just do the action. You don't have to announce it before it is done. When you announce it you give the negative system an opportunity to test you in achieving your action. We have enough tests in our lives without inviting more of them. Now lets answer the question Why does Reuben and Gad not feel the need to enter the land ans instead ask Moshe for Land on the Eastern side of the Jordan River? The Mekubalim explain that when a child is conceived the soul that is drawn is based on the unity of consciousness between a Husband and Wife at the moment of conception. When Reuben was conceived there was no unity between Jacob and Lea because Jacob was in unity with Rachel as he was under the impression that Lea was Rachel. This lack of unity at conception left Reuben with a Tikune and a feeling that he was less than his brothers. This manifested in the way he dealth with his brothers and justified his feeling that the land on the Eastern side of the Jordan was better for the Tribe of Reuben. They were not merrited to enter the land. This teaches us that our parents continue to impact our consciousness even when they are not arround. So why was this felt by Gad. For the same reason. On the night of Gad's conception, Lea substituted her hand maid Zilpah unbeknown to Jacob. This was the balancing of the universe Tikune necessary for Lea's part in the deception of Jacob. Look in the Torah and see who named Gad and what is the blessing associated with his name. We have the opportunity to learn so many spiritual lessons from this Parasha. These lessons all deal with consciousness. We can learn some amazing laws of consciousness from the maftir; the Names of the Daughters of Zelophad and the need to marry within the Tribe of Menashe, in order to keep their land within the land of Menashe and within the Tribe. Why do you think the physical law says that women who inherit land must marry within the Tribe? This teaches us that each person relates to a unique physical location that is connected to their soul consciousness. Where are you living? Is it a location that is "home" to you? Is it time for you to make Aliya? Remember this is a major Tikune for the Children of Israel who live outside of Israel in our generation. Can you give up the material comfort of the West to be comfortable in your connection and Love of the Land? Shabbat Shalom chanoch P. S.
