Week of December 21, 2008 Shabbat Mikketz Rosh Chodesh Tevet, 5769 | |
---|---|
The name of the Parasha is Mikketz. It usually translates as "At the end". The first word is Vav Hay Yood Hay which means that the leading vav is both a connection to last weeks reading and also can be transforming the tense of the Verb Hay Yood Hay which is the verb "to be". In this form Hayah means "It was". With the leading Vav it becomes "It or He will be". Therefore the initial sentence can be translated as "He will be, at the end (the rest of this verse is just as confusing - because the next word is usually translated as two years but may be read as days of two(f) ocean among other meanings. All of the stories relate to aspects of redemption. A quick redemption for Joseph and a process leading to redemption for the other brothers. There are 146 verses which is koof mem vav. These letters can be permutated to be koof vav mem sofit which means "to rise" "to get up" "to be realized" or "to be brought into effect". Our sages explain that the fact that the Portion of Beraishit and the Portion of Mikketz have the same number of verses is not a coincidence (as if there ever is a coincidence). Mikketz is usually the Portion read on Shabbat Chanukah. During Beraishit we have the tradition that the Light of creation is hidden away for the righteous. This is called Ohr HaGanuz. During Chanukah the Ohr HaGanuz is revealed again as the Light of Chanuka - the Light of Miracles. The portion of Beraishit can be thought of as the beginning of our physical world. The portion of Mikketz can be thought of as the beginning of the spiritual nation of Israel. This is one of the connections between the two. The code words for this Parasha are also revealing. There are 3 words. One is Aleph mem Tzadi Yood Hay. Aleph Mem Tzadi is translated as "to adopt" and "to take control". The final Letters are Yood Hay a name for God. Another code word is Yood Chet Zion Koof Yood Hay Vav. Yood Chet Zion Koof is a word that means "will strengthen". The final 3 Letters spell anothe name for HaShem. The 3rd code word is a phrase that comes near the end of the Parasha. The phrase is VeHaYa Le Eved which translates He Shall be my slave. An unusual connection is also noted for this Parasha. There are 2025 words in the Portion. This connection is explained that the Gematria of the word Ner (candle) is 250. There are 8 nights of Chanukah which means that there are 8 candles lit during the Chag. Therefore 8 times 250 = 2000. To this we add the 25th day of Kislev and we have revealed the connection between this Parasha and the Holiday of Chanukah. What all of these verses and initial words indicate is that the essence of this Parasha is Redemption. So lets understand what is Redemption. Usually it is used as the word Geulah. this word has a shoresh that means to redeem, to free, to liberate. The same shoresh means to defile or to pollute. Of course when we speak of the redemption we are talking about the removal of negativity from our world and be able to live without chaos in a world filled with peace contentment and fullfillment. Another word for redemption is Pideon as in the Mitzvah of Pideon HaBen. This is the only Mitzvah that was not given to the Erev Rav by Moshe when we left Egypt. it is also a Mitzvah that is frequently overlooked in today's world. This is primarily because people are not informed about this Mitzvah. The ritual is quite simple. The Mother and Father bring a child to a Cohen (Priest); The Priest asks a few questions to verify that this male child is a first born child; Since it is a first born than the Father pays the Priest 5 Silver Coins and in effect buys back the child or redeems the child from servitude. Of course the question is what servitude? Before i answer that lets look at the Hebrew word Pideon. Pideon means redeem and also ransom. The Mitzvah of Pideon HaBen is the ransoming of the First Born. When each child is born it is both a physical opening from his Mother's womb and a spiritual opening as in the beginning of his life. Kohellet in Mislai teaches us "Sin crouches at the Door!". The meaning of this is explained in the Zohar. Each child receives the negative force as part of his Nefesh when he comes into the world. It is not until the age of 13 (at the time of his Bar Mitzvah) that he receives his good inclination. The ultimate negative force is death. A child can not handle this energy and needs to be ransomed from the negative side. This is done through the Priest and the Mitzvah of Pidyon HaBen. Were you a first born? Did you have a Pidyon HaBen? It is never too late. Go see your Rabbi and let him arrange the Mitzvah for you. This energy has been in you - blocking you since the day you were born. It is time to have it removed. How about someone who is not a first born? This level of energy is not yours. It is not necessary for you but i highly reccomend that you participate in the Pidyon HaBen of someone else. How about the first born child of a Levi or Cohen? They have the vessels to be able to handle this energy. Therefore they don't need to have a redemption. This week look for the opportunities that allow you to ransom yourself from the desire to receive for your self alone. Redeem yourself by choosing to transform this selfish desire into a desire to receive in order to share. As we go into the Month of Tevet please be careful of falling into ANGER. This will probably not be present through Shabbat since the Holiday of Hanuka continues for two days into Tevet. Yet the energy is always lurking to lure the unprepared.
