Week of February 15, 2009 Shabbat Mishpatim 15 Shevat, 5769 | |

The name of this Parasha is Mishpatim which translates as Laws. There are three words in Hebrew that translate as Laws. In Hebrew there are no synonyms. The three words are Hok (Laws that can not be understood rationally and logically by humans) Calal (rules that can be understood but we would not arrive at them ourselves) and Mishpat. Mishpat means laws that we would arrive at on our own living with and among other people. These are usually referred to as Tort Laws. There are 118 verses in Mishpatim. Many Rabbi's today do not know how to deal with this section because on its surface it deals with Hebrew Slaves and Goring Oxen. The majority of people don't own slaves or Oxen today. Of couse this is not what the Portion is about. The code words the Sages have given for the number of verses are Aziel and Chanani. Aziel is spelled Ayin Zion yood Aleph Lamed. Chanani is spelled Chet Nun Nun Yood. Aziel means "My strength is God". Chanani means "My Prayer" or "My Endowment". On its surface non of these words help us understand the inner essence of this portion. 118 has a word with the same Gematria. The word is Chet Lamed Pey Sofit. this word means to pass, change, renew. The Zohar connects us to this meaning as it explains most of the laws of reincarnation in the Parashsa of Mishpatim. The purpose of reincarnation is to renew our relationship with the physical world so that we change the mistakes we made in our last lifetime. At the same time the essence of this portion is about appreciation because in the same laws written into this portion we receive three levels of understanding about these laws. This leads to our appreciation of the wonder of HaShem. The three levels are 1. Tort laws; 2. Laws of reincarnation; and 3. Laws relating to Human Values. Tort laws can be studied from the Talmud and other souces. The Laws of reincarnation can be realized and studied by the Sharai Gilgulim (Gates of Reincarnation) written by Rabbi Chaim Vital the main student of the teachings of the ARI - Rabbi Issac Luria. One example of these laws is expounded upon in the Zohar and gives an explantion of a little understood and rarely done Mitzvah. The Mitzvah is the reason Yehudah gave his Son Er's wife Tamar to his second son and when she actually became pregnant from Judah himself she had twins. This is because - according to Kabblah and the laws of reincarnation - when a man dies childless his soul is kept in limbo until his brother marries his widow and the child they bring is the dead man's soul. Of course today we have a ritual that frees the dead man's soul to reincarnate in a more generally understood way. That is called the Chalitza. One of the statements that the brother must say in the ritual is i rebuke my brother. People truly do not understand what they do. There are people in Israel to day who use the ritual as a means of blackmailing the widow into paying money to perform the ritual of Chalitza when it is their own son's and brothers soul which is held in Limbo. I will give a few examples of the laws relating to human values because they are the hardest to relate to. 1. Male Hebrew Slave is referring to how we block the flowing of Shefa (God's Beneficence) into our world. 2. Female Hebrew Slave is referring to how we block the the receiving of Shefa into our world. 3. Accidental Death shows us that all actions have consequences. The person who dies was a murderer in his last lifetime (so says Kabbalah) and the person who caused the accidental death must live with the consequence of his lack of being careful. 4. Oxen who Gores - is telling us about the hidden levels of negativity we have built for ourselves that must be removed. 5. Lying - this section teaches us not to limit ourselves. Most people tell white lies. These are small lies that don't "really" matter. Yet it shows that we are thinking small. Big lies will be found out so we don't tell them. Learn to think big because HaShem wants to give you more than you can even realize. I hope you truly enjoy the energy of Mishpatim! Are you interested in learning more Hidden Wisdom?
