This week the Parasha of משפתים Mishpatim is read. It is the sixth week of the period of Shovavim שובבים!. Please read the discussion about Shovavim from a previous weeks email about Shemot. Also For additional informaton about Tshuvah please listen to recordings about Tshuvah. Here is a link for a cartoon summary of the Parasha. We hope you enjoy it. Torah Readings: Exodus Chapter 21 Verse 1 to Chapter 24 Verse 18. There are 118 Verses which, by gematria, is קיח. In a different order חיק, this word means bosom or heart. The sages have given us 2 code words. They are עזיאל and חנני. The first means "My strength is God" and the second means "charming'. It also means "my amnesty". There are 1462 אתסב words in the Parasha. When permutated these letters spell 2 words that imply opposite meanings. One way spells "to drink heavily" and another permutation spells "defiling". We will understand this when we truly understand the essence of this Parasha. The essence of Mispatim can only be understood by reading a few verses toward the end of the Parasha. I will explain the essence when i discuss these verses later in this email. Maftir: Chapter 24 Verses 16 to 18. There are 3 verses and is 1 space in the Maftir. Spaces: There are 32 spaces in the Parasha. 32 is the gematria of the Hebrew word Heart or Lev לב. This will also be understood when we discuss the essence of the Parasha. Haftara: Sephardim and Ashkenazim read the same Haftara: The Haftara is Jeremiah Chapter 34 verse 8 to 22 plus Chapter 33 verse 25 and 26. This is a total of 17 verses and 4 spaces. Written and Spoken Verses: In the Parasha there is one word that is spoken differently than it is spelled. In the Haftara there are 2 words that are spoken differently than spelled. In Exodus Chapter 21 Verse 8 the word Lo is spelled/written Lamed Aleph which means no, while the word is spoken Lo it is a different word than what is written. It is spelled/written Lamed Vav in the Chumash which is teaching what should be said as well as what is written. This word means "him" or "if / only". (for those who are not familiar with Hebew the words לא and לו are pronounced the same (Lo) but mean two different things (no and him).) The reason behind this difference is related to the laws of reincarnation, as most of the laws of reincarnation come from the Parasha of Mishpatim. In the Haftara in Chapter 34 verse 11 the word is spoken ויכבשים yet it is spelled with a yood between the Bet and the Shin like this ויכבישים. The word is pronounced as if it does not have this yood. The way the word is pronounced it has the meaning of subjugating. With the addition of the Yood, it allows the word to be "seen" as two words ויכב and ישים. The second word can be translated "there is a sea". The first word is translated as "weeping". Therefore we can translate this as "a sea of weeping". When one understands the essence of the literal history behind this Prophecy, one will be able to relate to the reason for this additional yood. Please see below. The second word that is written and spoken differently takes place in Chapter 33 verse 26. The word is spelled אשוב and is translated "return". The spoken word replaces the Vav with a Yood. This allows the word to be translated as "fire of 12". Again when one understands the essence of the Parasha and the Haftara this change will be understood! Please see below. Dots: There are no Dots over any letters in this Parasha or Haftara. Large or Small Letters: There are no large or small letters in either reading. Columns: All columns start with a Vav. There are 3 complete columns and 2 partial columns. As promised, this year i will give some insights into the Haftarot. The History of this Prophecy helps us to understand the reason behind the two words that are written and spoken differently in the Haftara. It also helps us to understand the physical reason behind the reading of this Haftara with the Parasha of Mishpatim. King Zedekiah of the kingdom of Judah did not release his or the nobles slaves as per the Mitzvah from Mishpatim at the end of 7 years indenture. He did not do this for many years. King Nebuchanezzer has brought his army to destroy Jerusalem because King Zedekiah has stopped paying taxes and sending tribute to him. King Zedekiah seemingly repents and frees all of the Hebrew bondsman and bondswomen who have already served much more than their 7 years indenture. They hold a ceremony creating a brit (contract) which includes a ritual similar to what Abraham did with Malkitzedek which includes splitting a calf in half and walking between the parts. King Zedekiah had all of his nobles walk through the calf along with himself demonstrating to the people and the bondsmen and bondswomen that they were all free. . . Nebuchanezer leaves to conquer Egypt. King Zedekiah reneges and enslaves all of the bondsmen and women again. This prophecy is telling us what will happen to him and the people who walked through the calf and also the Jewish Nation as well. The Haftara includes 2 additional verses from elsewhere in the prophecies of Jeremiah (Chapter 33 ). Nominally this is done to not end the reading on a negative note, but to end on a positive note. In addition, by adding these 2 verses we are actually adding to the idea of goodness by making the reading 17 verses (Tov which means good in Hebrew has a gematria of 17). Read below for an understanding of the spiritual reason that this Haftara is read with Mishpatim. To understand the essence of the Parasha, let me describe some literal relationships. The story of the Parasha of Mishpatim is usually described as a list of laws and ordinances dealing with regular issues that all societies deal with. Slavery, torts or monies to be paid for harming another person or causing another citizen or non citizen to come to harm by falling in a pit or letting loose your Ox. and similar ideas. In the Zohar these laws are shown to be the laws of reincarnation as well. What most people ignore is the fact that the First word in the Parasha is V'Eleh which translates as "And these". The leading Vav indicates that this Parasha is connected to the preceding Parasha. Some commentators do say that these laws were given to Moshe on Mt Sinai and we need to treat each law or Mitzvah as being just as important as each of the Esser Debrot. What i mean to say is that each Mitzvah is just as important as every other Mitzvah even when we think one Mitzvah is more important than another Mitzvah. They are all equally important in saving our lives; in connecting us to Hashem; and in cleansing our lives to enable us to grow spiritually to the level of Vayahavta Lerayacha Camocha - Love your Neighbor as Yourself! I have never read any commentary who pointed out that the gematria of V'Eleh is 42 and connects to the Ana Bekoach prayer and the 42 Letter Name of God used by Elokim to create the phsyical and spiritual worlds. Lets see why this is important. Eleh translates as "these" as in These Laws". The Vav at the beginning connects us to the preceding section and Parasha which is the Esser Debrot from the Parasha of Yitro. Eleh has a gematria of 36 which relates to the 36 candles we light on Chanuka. With the Vav the gematria is 42 which relates to the 42 letter name of God which is the name/attribute used by Hashem to effect the physical creation. The purpose of creation is to remove bread of shame. Reincarnation which is concealed within the laws expressed in the Parasha of Mishpatim, is one of the tools used by HaShem to assists us to remove bread of shame. Please read Chapter 24 Verses 9, 10, and 11. Here they are in Hebrew: 9. ויעל משה ואהרן נדב ואביהוא ושבעים מזקני ישראל ויראו את אלהי ישראל ותחת רגליו כמעשה לבנת הספיר 10 וכעצם השמים לטהר ואל-אצילי בני ישראל לא שלח ידו ויחזו את-האלהים ויאכלו 11 וישתו English: 9. Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; 10. and they saw the God of Israel; and there was under His feet the like of a paved work of sapphire stone, and the like of the very heaven for clearness. 11. And upon the nobles of the children of Israel He laid not His hand; and they beheld God, and did eat and drink. Most people read this and say so what. Yet this is teaching us the essence of all of the Torah especially the Parasha of Mishpatim and Yitro! What did the elders and Nadav and Avihu do wrong that God withholds his hand? The Torah does not indicate that they expressed wonder or appreciation at the amazing vision they were given as a gift. To emphasize, There is no expression of appreciation. The midrash tells us that by eating and drinking after seeing God they forfeited their lives. They all died but did not know it. They continued to walk around, they continued to interact with other people yet actually the decree of death was issued at this moment. Just like Adam, who God said would die if he ate from the Tree of Knowledge. Adam died at that moment but it took 930 years to manifest death in his life. These 72 people died from not expressing appreciation to HaShem for showing them this image of himself. And this was right after they heard the Esser Debrot with its expression of "Do not build images of other Gods". Is it a far leap to realize that images of other Gods means that images of God is truly spectacular and meaningful. The essense of the Parasha is to learn that everything comes from God. That everything that comes from God is Good, even if it seems to us to be not so good. What seems to us to be punishments never come from God, they come from our own actions due to the Boomerang law. (What you do you receive; do positive and receive positive; do negative and receive chaos). When these 72 (70 Elders plus Nadav and Avihu) people saw God, they did not appreciate it. They accepted it as a common place event. It is not a common place event to see God. They may even (Has V'Shalom) felt entitled to see God and we know that no one is entitled to any goodness. All goodness comes through Gods mercy. All things that happen in our lives are good to us; or for us. The lesson is to appreciate what we receive in life. Money; Children; health; happiness; sadness; illness; lack of resources; even our thoughts of what we want to accomplish in this life. Appreciate and be thankful. This is the essence and message of Mishpatim and of the Haftara. Our egos cause us to think that i earn the money that provides my family with all of the wonderful items in our material world. Our egos think we accomplish things and that we deserve these rewards of material items and honor and other aspects of our lives. This Parasha comes to techus the following truth. When we think that we deserve nothing we receive everything. When we think we deserve, we receive only the energy of "end" and ultimately this brings us to death! This also explains the code words from the Sages. To remind you - the code words are to drink heavily which means to drink a lot of water. Water is always a code word for Torah and connection to HaShem and the mercy of HaShem. The second code word is defiling. Defiling means to make something less Holy. Both of these are aspects of creation. While these appear opposites when we climb high on the level of consciousness we realize everything comes from the creator and we need to be thankful and appreciate all things including opposites and what appears to us to be painful and uncomfortable. The path to eternal life is the realization that i deserve nothing; appreciate what i have received including what i perceive as uncomfortable and hurtful; And always to ask for MORE! This brings us closer to the creator which brings us eternal life until we actually no longer have to die! This needs to be explained more clearly. What is eternal life! Our sages speak of the next world call Olam HaBah - the world to come. Most people think of this as heaven. Yet it actually is not heaven called Zeir Anpin or the Garden of Eden. It is the world above that called Binah which is a Sepirah and is usually translated as Understanding. What we learn from this is that All of these things, Binah, Zeir Anpin can be in our physical world now. We do not have to physically die to experience this state of consciousness. What this means is that Olam Habah, Heaven, and the Mashiach can be achieved in our physical world. This is why i frequently speak about realizing that we no longer have to die. We no longer have to leave our physical world to reach these level of consciousness. Thanks to all of the light revealed by all of the people and sages who have lived before our generation we no longer have to physically die to reach the level of consciousness called eternal life. Eternal Life is the period of Mashiach; Eternal Life is Heaven on Earth; Eternal Life is a physical existence free of strife, war, and conflict. It is a physical life of Peace, Joy, Serenity, and fulfillment of all lacks and desires. Do you want this? This is why we need to study Kabbalah in our generation! Have you started your study? Let me teach another aspect of this truth. This is why we no longer have physical living sages who could provide an easier path to Olam HaBah for us. Yet we still have Tzadikim and Sages to utilize as these channels. They are available to us on their death anniverseries called Hilulot or Yartzeits; Also on Erev Rosh Chodesh, on Rosh Chodesh, and on the Full Moon Days of each month (The 15th of each Hebrew month), these sages are available to us. They continue to live in order to share with us. We see them as dead but as the Nazi's found out when they dug up these righteous peoples graves, their bodies never decomposed. They continue to live. We, in our generation, also can reach this level and in addition never have to go into the grave! Yes i know this is hard to accept as truth. Yet it is true and i invite you to start lighting Yartzeit candles each day to connect to a Tzadik who left (not died) this same day in the Hebrew calendar. You can find their names Here! Light the candles without a Blessing. Say their Names as you light the candles because their Name is a Blessing! Watch the blessings flow into your life!
