Before we discuss this week's Parasha, a quick note about the 7th day of Pesach and a Kabbalistic MinHag. The reason behind the 7th day of Pesach is the energy of the day that the Water Split. This is not just the water of the Red (Reed) Sea (by the way that is a corrupt translation) but every molecule of Water on the Planet split. This energy is available for us to tap every 7th Day of Pesach. How do we tap the Splitting of the Yam Suf or the Endless Sea. Approximately at Midnight or during the evening if that is too late to stay up or preferably just before the Morning Star. Put a Vessel (dish, cupk bowl , or some other container) of Water in the Middle of the Room. Then follow this procedure. If you can do so with a Minyan - Better; Put the Scroll on the Reading Table (Chumash if you do not have access to a Scroll); Scan the 72 Names of God - Use your personal connection to those Names if you have them (email me for information about that); Sing the Song of the Sea as you circle the vessel of water; Attempt to see the splitting of the water which is taking place as you sing.
A Simple Minhag but a powerful connection to the Energy.
This week the Name of the Parasha is Shmini which means 8th. The Baal HaTurin explains that the Gematria of the first phrase is equal to the phrase "The first of Nissan". From this and other Gematriot that he explains we know that The Mishkan was set up for 7 days in the Desert with Moshe acting as Cohen Gadol and then on the First of Nissan two things happen. Aaron takes over the Avodah of Cohen Gadol. The second item will be spoken about in another Parasha. But to save you all from impatience. It is the Death of Nadav and Avihu two of the sons of Aaron and Elisheva.
There are two unique items in the Scroll this week. At both of these, it is recommended that the Reader stop and allow the Congregation to Meditate on the meaning and energy of these items.
One is at Chapter 10 verse 16. It is the Middle of the Torah in Words. The other is Chapter 11 Verse 42 where there is a large VAV. This is the Middle of the Torah in Letters. It is of course that the word that this letter is part is the word Gachon which means Belly. The Belly is the Middle of our Body or maybe just the digestive system.
Each of these Middles gives us the opportunity to connect to the Central Column Balance especially in a period of the Omer when we need to connect to balance much more strongly.
There are other hints at the essence of this Parasha besides the Name. There are 91 verses in the Portion and the code word is Ayin Bet Dalet Yood Hay. This can be translated as the Slave of Yood Hay ( one of the Names of HaShem) or the work or service of Yood Hay. 91 is the Gematria of two names of HaShem - Yood Hay VAv Hay and Aleph DAlet Nun Yood. These two names when combined in different orders indicate the unity of the Spiritual and Physical worlds caused by the actions of the Top coming Down or the Lower elevating to the Upper. In essence 91 represents unity and balance. Just as the concept of 8 represents the eight Sephirot from Malchut which is Bina. Bina which means Understanding represents a level of consciousness which is above the physical world. It also represents the Cause of the Physical World. All of these concepts relate to Balance.
On the level of the story; There are two interesting spiritual lessons that our sages teach from the Literal Story. One is about Aaron who upon being informed of the death of his two sons was silent. He knew that he was the cause of these deaths due to his part in the Golden Calf. He accepted his responsibility and confirmed the Justice of the pain he must have felt by his silence. We can learn a similar attitude in our own lives when we recognize as is taught by the Baal Shem Tov. The universe was created for Me. Therefore i am the cause of my own pain. When i accept the judgement of the Universe which comes from HaShem i don't have to experience it again. When i complain "Why Me" perhaps it will come again because i have not cleansed it completely without that acceptance.
The other spiritual lesson comes from the question What is the cause or reason behind Kosher and Non Kosher animals and food? From the generation of Adam until the generation of the flood people did not eat animals only fruits, vegetables, and nuts. I am not even sure about fish. After the sins of the Generation of Noach and the Flood people were judged to need reincarnation as animals, as well as vegetables, and immaterial objects. Kosher Foods are meant to be eaten by people who know that they are assisting the elevation of the Human souls who have learned their lesson and are ready to reincarnate on the level of Human again. When someone eats a non Kosher animal they bring into their essence a spiritual being who is not ready to be on that level again. This leads to imbalance on the spiritual level which manifests as imbalance on the physical level. Of course this imbalance after so many generations has come to be considered normal and human. I hope you will consider this lesson and learn more about Kosher laws and their reasons.
