Week of March 20, 2011 Shabbat Shemini and Para Adumah,20th Adar Bet 5771 | |
---|---|
This week the Parasha of Shemini שמיני is read. Alsothe Shabbat is known as Shabbat ֔Parah Adumah which means Shabbat of the Red Heifer. Shemini means eight or eighth. On the Tree of Life the Eighth Sefira above Malchut (our physical world) is Binah. Binah is translated as understanding. Binah is also known as the mother. Binah is also called the energy store and represents the level we strive to reach and are unable to attain as long as we are in a physical body. The Red Heifer is a paradoxical spiritual action. The ashes of the Red Heifer cleans the most powerful agent of impurity - death. Yet the person preparing the ashes becomes impure. This reading of the Red Heifer is always done prior to Rosh Chodesh Nissan and after the Holiday of Purim. As we grow spiritually towards the new year as represented by Rosh Chodesh Nissan and the first 13 days of Nissan we remove doubt through Shabbat Zachor (last week); then Shabbat Parah removes death a stronger level of impurity and then we can do the actions of taking control of the spiritual Mikvahs (each month of the new year). Mikvah means a spiritual cleansing. Lets learn more below. Due to the timing of when these emails are sent i will also be discussing the Holiday of Purim. Actually Motzei Shabbat is the holiday of Purim and on the conference call phone number i will be reading the Megillah (scroll) in a unique way. A way that i think is connected to the way the scroll was read in the time of the second Temple. This reading will commence at 9 PM PST on the 20th of March and will continue at the advanced class at 10 AM PST on Sunday the 21st. I stongly suggest you listen to this reading unless you are attending a Purim party reading that includes the whole reading of the Megillah prior to your partying. I am presently giving a series of classes explaining the Holiday of Purim, the first 13 days of Nissan, The Holiday of Pesach, The counting of the Omer, The Holiday of the 7th day of Pesach, The Holidays of Iyar, and the Holiday of Shavuot or Pentecost (The Giving (Revelation) of the Torah). I strongly suggest that you listen to these classes which are on Sunday mornings at 10 AM and can be viewed on video conferencing with prior reservation and by conference call at 213-289-0500 with the code 911904#. You must agree to be recorded by pressing 1 as well. Here is a link for a cartoon summary of the Parasha. We hope you enjoy it. Torah Readings: Vayikra - Leviticus Chapter 9 Verse 1 to Chapter 11 Verse 47. There are 91 Verses which, by gematria, is the word צא. This word Tzadi Aleph has a number of meanings one of which relates to "exit". Another meaning relates to "passing of time". The code word is עבדיה which means "slave" or "service" to Yah. It can also mean "My service in the physical world". The subjects that are covered in this Parasha of Shemini are The initial service by Aaron and his sons, The death of Nadav and Avihu (2 sons of Aaron) for inappropriate service, and many of the laws of Kosher. All of these can be seen to relate to the above code word. After all the Children of Israel are to become the Priests of the other nations just as Aaron is the priest of the children of Israel. Keeping Kosher can be seen as the service to HaShem especially in todays world where many people follow the laws of Kosher as a health technique even though this is considered incorrect by both science and the orthodox world. The orthodox world keeps Kosher due to "Gods" Commands and science says a Kosher diet is not the most healthy type of diet. Also please note that 91 repesents the unity of the spiritual and physical world. It is a number that represents the name of God in the spiritual world (26 - Tetragramaton) and the name of God in the physical world (65 - Adonai). 26 plus 65 = 91. There are 1238 ארלח words in the Parasha. This word has no meaning in Hebrew until it is permutated. Then the word רחל means both the name Rachel and the word ewe meaning a baby lamb. Rachel represents motherhood as it relates to the Sphirah of Malchut while the ewe relates to idea of service to Hashem through sacrifice. i think you are beginning to get the understanding of the inner essence of this Parasha. It is spiritual growth through service to Hashem. Maftir: Numbers Chapter 19 Verses 1 to 22. There are 22 verses and 1 space. 22 verses relates to the 22 letters of the Hebrew Alef Bet which is necessary to have all of the energy present in order to neutralize and remove death. The 1 space shows the unity of energy. Even when we see different aspects of energy it is still always energy and not something else. Spaces: There are 6 spaces in the Parasha. 6 is the number of the Vav which represents Zeir Anpin (the 6 lower sefirot) in the Tree of Life. Zeir Anpin represents the spiritual work or service. Haftara: Sephardim and Ashkenazim read almost the same Haftar. The difference is two verses. The Ashkenazim read Ezekiel Chapter 36 Verses 16 to 38. This is 23 verses. This number relates to all of the energy associated with the letters of the Aleph Bet including the concealed letter that will be revealed with the coming of Mashiach. The Sefardim read 2 less verses - they read Verse of Chapter 16 also, yet stop at verse 36. This makes 21 verses which represents the energy of the name of God Ehyeh. The name of God associated with Binah. The Sephardim have 3 spaces representing the 3 columns and the Ashkenazim have 4 spaces representing the 4 worlds.Written and Spoken Verses: There are no words written one way and spoken another way in the Haftara. There are two words written one way and spoken another in the Parasha. In Chapter 11 Verse 21 the word lo is written לא meaning no and read as לו meaning him. This verse is speaking about which insects are kosher and not kosher. The verse when read as him means the insect which has a jumping leg above his walking leg and when the word is no, it means an insect which has only jumping legs but not truly walking legs. The Rabbi's limit the no meaning so that that insect is not considered kosher. The other word written and spoken differently is in Chapter 9 verse 22. The word is written ידו meaning "his hand" and read ידיו meaning "his hands". The verse is speaking about the Hands of Aaron when he is blessing the people. He raised both hands with the right hand slightly higher. This is the reason for this different reading and writing of this word. Large or Small Letters: There are no large or small letters in the Haftara. There is a large Vav in the word גחון Gahon which means Belly in word in Chapter 11 Verse 42. One meaning of this Vav being large is that it represents the 6 curses visited upon the snake for his part in the sin of Adam and Eve. Vav has the gematria of six. Another reason is that this Vav is the Middle of the Torah in letters. This allows us to connect to the Central column of the Tree of life. It is also interesting to note that the word Gahon means belly which is the middle of the human body. Or is that only coincidence (Chas V'shalom). Columns: All columns start with a Vav. There are 2 full columns and 2 partial columns. There is one additional unique event in this reading. When the reader reads the word דרש Chapter 10 Verse 16, we have reached the middle of the Torah Scroll in the number of words. This gives us the opportunity to connect to the Central Column. The Center Column of the Tree of Life represents Balance. This gives us the opportunity to connect to balance during the reading as well as in our personal lives. The next word that is read is a duplicate of this word דרש. This is a technique used in the Torah to emphasize the idea being expressed by that word. The word itself means "inquire". This teaches us the spiritual law that there is always many meanings within the Torah and it is important for us to constantly delve deeper and deeper into the meaning within the Torah to continue our spiritual work and arrive at the level of "true" balance. As promised, this year i will give some insights into the Haftarot. It is difficult to see the connection of this Haftara to the Parasha. The dedication of the Mishkan that takes place on the 8th day which is the 1st of Nissan is a renewal and forgiveness from the Sin of the Golden Calf. The Haftara is prophesying about a renewal of the Children of Israel. There will be a renewal of a soul in each of the Children of Israel. There will be a renewal within the cities of the Land of Israel. There will be a renewal of the reputation of the Land of Israel. All of these renewals come about through the repentance of the people yet it also is undeserved and is a gift of mercy from Hashem. It is hard to understand how spiritual growth comes about through service to HaShem. It is hard to understand how renewal of all of the above comes about through service to HaShem. It is time to reveal the essence of the laws of Kashrut, which are included in the Parasha. 1. All laws of kashrut are related to laws of energy. When something is cold than impurity moves slower and does not make impure another food next to it. When something is heated or cooking than the impurity moves faster and makes something next to it impure. 2. An animal that has split hooves and chews its cud demonstrates that it has two types of energy within it. It has both sharing and receiving energy (split hooves) and it also has inbuilt restriction (chewing its cud), the ability to balance these two types of energy. 3) A fish is kosher if it has scales and fins. The fins relate to the two types of energy (sharing and receiving). The scales demonstrate reflection (restriction) which is the ability to balance the two energies. 4)The laws of Kashrut do not relate to health. The healthy aspect of a kosher diet comes from the laws of energy transfer described above. The healthy aspect only comes as an effect and not a cause. 5) There are 20 forbidden birds representing the 10 sephirot of direct light and 10 sephirot of returning light of the negative system. Remember every thing that is created is created one opposite the other. One from the good side and one from the negative side; one opposite the other. To explain this a little more: To give people free will it is necessary that they not "see" the consequences of their decisions. Therefore it is necessary to have 2 systems. One system we call good or the Tree of Life. The other system we call negative or the Tree of Knowledge Good and Evil. (Please note it is not called the Tree of Death or another name.) These 2 Trees are code words for the Frames of Reference of what world we live in from moment to moment. In the Tree of Life there is no evil. In the Tree of knowledge there is both good and evil. We live in the Tree of Knowledge most of the time. Each decision we make, will have a consequence be it for good or for evil. We can not "see" that consequence. This is what gives us free choice. Having free choice is very important because it is the method by which we get closer to the Creator. When we make a choice which consequence is good we get closer to the Creator and eventually are able to change to the Tree of Life where there is no evil. When we make a choice which consequence is evil we move farther away from the creator. Both systems are created as mirror images of each other. One opposite the other. They are connected together only in our physical world. This is why it is so hard to "see" the consequences of our actions, because each "side" appears to us to be equal in strength and power. Of course this is false but it is the system that gives us free will. 6) There are 4 types of insects that may be eaten as kosher but we do not know today which they are. 7) A vegetarian diet is not a kosher diet. Man was not able to eat animals until after the Great Flood of Noach. The generation was so negative that it was necessary to be incarnated into animals and these souls need assistance in order to elevate back to the human level. That is why people are allowed to eat meat. While today people will teach that a vegetarian diet is more spiritual and therefore more beneficial. This is not true. The most negative generation in history was the generation of the flood who were vegetarians. The mekubalim know that it is a Mtizvah to eat the appropriate kosher meat in order to assist human souls, which incarnated into animals, to elevate back to the level of human. They also know that eating an animal has the potential to lower their level of consciousness to that of the animal. The resolution the Mekubalim follow is to eat meat only on Shabbat and then only a minimum amount of kosher meat. One item that needs to be mentioned. A Kosher diet is not a healthy diet according to modern nutritional science. Of course they are wrong. They do not understand about the elevation of human souls and the laws of reincarnation. When that soul has cleansed itself and is ready to be elevated the animal will be slaughtered in a kosher manner and the meat will find its way to the table of someone who is knowledgeable in how to assist this soul in its elevation. In return, this soul having been cleansed by actually completing its Tikune. Therefore it is actually on a high level as it has completed its Tikune, otherwise it would not be ready to elevate to the human level, and eventually back to the spiritual worlds when it accompanies the human soul to the spiritual worlds during sleep. Since it is on this high level it assists us, those who eat it, in various ways that are too long to go into in this email. A Kosher diet is a healthy diet when your meat is limited to Shabbat and Holidays. The Nutrional Science can not measure this as part of their system. Finally, i find a most beautiful spiritual law that is learned from the law of koshering an impure earthenware vessel. To kosher an earthenware (ceramic or porcelin) dish or vessel that has become impure it must be broken. Of course it then is not useable but it is kosher. What is the body of man made from? Earth! How do you kosher a body that has become impure through death weather it is actually dead or feels dead from the pain it is undergoing. This earthenware vessel we call a body must be broken. . . It can be that it is broken by decomposition in the grave. Or it can be broken by having a broken heart before it gets to the grave. In any event the body must be broken in order to elevate higher and be closer to the Creator. Many people describe certain of their life actions as a broken heart. Is this what is necessary to acheive a new beginning as a kosher vessel? Finally a teaching from the Midrash to answer the question, why do Jewish people need direction about Kosher food. Why do people, who are called Children of Israel, need to be instructed to eat Kosher and other people from other nations are not? The midrash answers this question with a parable. There are two sick patients of the one doctor. They both have the same disease. To patient one the doctor say eat anything you want to eat there are no restrictions. To the other patient the doctor is very specific, you may eat this but not that. The directions of the doctor are meant to make this patient heal and be well. The family of the second patient ask the doctor why can my relative eat very expensive and difficult to prepare foods while patient one can eat anything. The doctors answer is : Patient one will not recover so it makes no difference what he eats. Patient two can recover but only if he is careful with what he eats. Do you want to recover and heal yourself? It is most difficult to do when you are not completely Kosher in your eating. When you eat something that is not Kosher you are eating something that the Creator is warning us about. YOU CAN NOT HANDLE THE ENERGY INVOLVED. For you it is unbalanced and you do not have the tools to balance it in your life. The midrash seems to imply that people who eat non Kosher food will not survive. This is not true. Everyone will return to the endless world. For those people who the creator has deemed able to eat of these non Kosher foods,in this lifetime, they also do not have the tools to balance the energy involved. So they will have to wait until another lifetime to learn to balance this energy that they have consumed improperly. Do you think you might want to shorten your process by starting now to eat Kosher and not waiting? Finally it is important to know that the word Kosher כשר means fit, valid, proper, opportunity, and power. It also has the meaning of "like a Sar". Sar is the title of each of the angelic chiefs of the 70 nations. Do you want to be like a Sar? Then choose to eat Kosher! It is what man is designed to aspire to. To be a Sar of a World. To be a Sar of a world one must first rise to a level of the Angelic Sarim! Shabbat Shalom chanoch P. S.
