Of course all classes will be available by live conference call and some will be available by Skype as well. There are tentative discussions regarding teaching in Mexico as well. We will keep you informed. I am also looking to meet other students and teach in other locations as requested. Please send an email indicating your area and if you are interested to yeshshem@hotmail.com. The name of the Parasha this week is Shlach Lecha. Please read the previous years email (link is to the left) to better understand this email. Shlach Lecha is generally translated as "Send Men or Send forth men". The word Lecha means to you. It is a reflexive verb form. Therefore the translation should be Send for yourself, some Men (Anashim spelled Aleph Nun Shin Yood Mem Sofit). Anashim is also a interesting word as there are many words in Hebrew that means Men including Ishim (spelled Aleph Yood Shin Yood Mem Sofit), Gever (Gimmel Bet Resh), Adam, and other words. What do we learn from this substituting the Nun for the Yood (Ishim to Anashim). As we learned last week the Nun relates to falling, while the Yood relates to connection to HaShem and elevating. Who were these Men. They were the heads of the Tribes which we read about in both Bamidbar and Nasso. Except these men now have different names. Most of these Names are not positive (see below). In fact Moshe had to change Joshua's name by adding a Yood to the name Hoshea (See Below). I have on the website the Meaning of Tribal Leaders from Naso. You will need to link from this page to each name by going in the order listed below. It is my intention before next Pesach to analyze the Names of the Tribal Leaders frorm Slach Lecha for a full comparison. Until then i am including a short translation of the First Names of Tribal Leader From Shlach Lecha. Below i have listed the order of the Tribes as listed in the Parasha of Naso (The Torah lists the Tribes in the order that they brought the sacrifices at the dedication of the Temple). In each Tribal section i list the name of the Leader of the Tribe from Naso and then the Name of the Leader of the Tribe listed in Shlach Lecha which are the spies/tourists that Moshe sent to "see" the Land in advance of the people entering The Land. The midrash teaches us that each Leader (with both names) is the same person. Tribe of Judah: Nachshon Ben Aminadav mentioned First is the same man as Caleb Ben Jephunneh listed third. Caleb means dog or "like a heart". For the Tribe of Issachar: Natanel Ben Tzoar mention Second is the same man as Yigal Ben Joseph listed fourth. Yigal means to Liberate. For the Tribe of Zebulan: Eliab Ben Helon mentioned third is the same man as Gaddiel Ben Sodi listed seventh. Gaddiel means "God's young goat". For the Tribe of Reuben: EliTzur Ben SedaiUr mentioned fourth is the same man as Shammua Ben Zaccur listed first. Shammua means Listen or "And a Name for Eye". For the Tribe of Shimon: Shelumiel Ben Tzurishadai mentioned fifth is the same man as Shafat Ben Hori listed second. Shafat means "to judge". For the Tribe of Gad: Elyasaf Ben Deuel mentioned sixth is the same man as Geuel Ben Machi listed twelfth. Geuel means "His Exalted". For the Tribe of Ephraim: Elishama Ben Amihud mentioned seventh is the same man as Hoshea Ben Nun listed fifth. Moshe added a Yood to change his name to Joshua. The name Hoshea means "to be saved". The name Joshua means "To be saved by God". For the Tribe of Manasseh: Gamaliel Ben Pedahzur mentioned eighth is the same man as Gaddi Ben Susi listed eighth. Gaddi means "a young goat or kid". Susi means "My Horse". what do you think of someone called Goat son of my horse? For the Tribe of Benjamin: Abidan Ben Gideoni mentioned ninth is the same man as Palti Ben Raphu listed sixth. Palti means to throw up or to discharge. For the Tribe of Dan: Achiezer Ben Amishshadai mentioned tenth is the same man as Ammiel Ben Gemalli listed ninth. Ammiel means "My Peoples God" or "My Darkness for God". For the Tribe of Asher: Pagiel Ben Ochran mentioned eleventh is the same man as Sethur Ben Michael listed eleventh. Sethur means unkempt or contradictory. For the Tribe of Naphtali: Ahira Ben Enan mentioned twelvth is the same man as Nachbi Ben Vophsi listed eleventh. Nachbi means "comfort of 12". The ARI teaches that each of these leaders were given an Ibur (an additional higher soul) to assist him on this vacation to the Land of Milk and Honey. These Iburim were none other that the Righteous Sons of Jacob - the progenitors of the 12 Tribes. Caleb who was already a reincarnation of the sevant of Avraham - Eliezer, received an Ibur of Yehudah. Joshua received, for his protection, the progenitor of the Tribe of Levi. Each of the other 10 Heads of the Tribe received the righteous soul of the progenitor of their Tribe. This is also one of the connections and teachings made by the 10 spaces in this weeks parasha. There is also a unique teaching from the sages about this Parasha and these heads of the Tribes. They are not listed in the same order as they are listed in any other listing of the Tribes or the Sons of Jacob anywhere in the Torah. The Great commentator from the Middle Ages, Abraham Ibn Ezra teaches that this listing represents the relative spiritual level of these leaders. This is an amazing teaching from the Torah. It teaches us, that as we progress spiritually we need, to constantly assess our spiritual level both on the level of where we are versus where we were and where we want to go as well as where we are against the other spiritual level of the people around us. How can we do that? Usually we evaluate our position either physically or spiritually against some one else or even ourselves in the sense of where were we and where are we going for the purpose of feeling good about ourselves. This teaching from the Torah tells us to do this by being ruthlessly honest with ourselves. In other words, we do not judge ourselves for the purpose of our egos but we judge ourselves to assist us in our spiritual growth. This relationship (myself now vs myself earlier or against my goal; myself vs my friend; or myself vs my neighnor) can be used by us to motivate spiritual growth not to feel good that we are higher than someone else. As we evaluate our level spiritually Remember the person who is lower than you is capable of doing a spiritual action that you can not do. That action is his Tikune and you can not do it for him. Nor can he do yours. Therefore think of yourself as lower than him except when you are evaluating your spiritual level. Then you need to be honest in your evaluation but not emotional thinking i am better than him because of this that or another reason. Learn from these conflicting statements about spiritual growth and evaluation. Know that the reason for you to know where you are spiritually (evaluate yourself vs others or yourself in an earlier or later time period) is to learn to be greater in the attribute of being humble. The essence of this Parasha is about judgment. HaShem has said to each of us through our sages - (each verse in the Torah is speaking to you Today at your spiritual level) and also to the Children of Israel, in the Written Torah - The Land is a Land Flowing with Milk and Honey. So if Hashem has said this - Why do you need to go into the Land to see it? Don't you trust HaShem? So we have to ask why did Moshe send the Tourists? For the same reason Why do you want to know the future? We all know the future, on the unconscious level, but we are still not sure of our connection to this answer. The negative inclination is always saying . . . But are you sure? What about ...this....or that....or the other thing. So why did Moshe listen to the negative inclination and send the spies? To give us a protection shield against the negative side. Has Ve Shalom that Moshe listened to the negative inclination. Moshe used subtlety and ingenuity to assist us at the same time he fooled the negative side into doing what is best for us. Remember Moshe was trying to elevate the Erev Rav which he took out of Egypt against the advise of HaShem. That is what the energy of this Parasha is all about - our protection shield. I hope you get yours. All you have to do is hear the Torah on Shabbat Morning! There is a large Yood in this Parasha. It is at Chapter 14 Verse 17 in the word Yigdal (Yood Gimmel Dalet Lamed). This verse is leading into the 9 attributes of Mercy that Moshe used to ask God to forgive the Tourists. (Moshe used 9 of the 13 attributes. The sages teach us that these 9 relate to a lower level of consciousness referred to as body, while the 13 Attributes of Mercy relate to a higher level of consciousness called Head). The word Yigdal has a shoresh without the Yood and the shoresh (Gimmel Dalet Lamed) is translated as elevate, praise, to increase, to grow. In Hebrew the Yood at the beginning of a verb that is being conjugated means active. Therefore the word Yigdal means active growth or active praise or to actively elevate. The words said to Moshe, and especially the Large Yood, is saying are assisting all of us to elevate spiritually. Another understanding of this word Yigdal is to split the word in two. Yood gimmel is the gematria of 13 while the letters dalet lamed spell the word dal which means poor. Therefore the word means the poor 13. As the sages teach this is 9 attributes of Hashem's mercy utilized in the frame of the body which lacks something. I would also like to point out a Kabbalistic teaching from the Ramchal - Rabbi Moshe Luzatto. In the section on Tzitzit which is Chapter 15 Verses 37 to 41. There are 5 Verses composed of 69 words. This is the 4th section of the Shma Israel prayer. When we say this section we say 72 words by repeating the last 3 words. The word Emet is not included in the Torah or in the teaching of the Ramchal. The Ramchal teaches that the 72 Names of God which the Zohar tells us to form from the 3 verse in Exodus Chapter 14 Verses 19 to 21 can be formed in a different order and that we are to unify these 72 Names (referred to as the 72 Names from the Tzadikim) with each of these 72 words each time we say the Shma Israel. Other sages teach that each persons birth date connect to one of these 72 Names from the Tzadikim (as well as one of the 72 Names of God). These personal Names can assist one in knowing his Personal Tikune. These personal names will be available on the www.yeshshem.com website as soon as donations are available to manifest them. Are you able to donate for this project? I apologize to anyone who finds this next discussion difficult. In our generation we have come to use the word Nazi to mean the political party in power in Germany before and during the second world war. It also has come to mean people who hate. So would you like to know when the word Nazi was first used and by whom? It is in the Torah (Chapter 14 Verse 11). It is the word YeNaATZuNi. (Do you see the word part NaATzi)? It was said by HaShem to Moshe referring to people who hate. To explain this a little more: The people had just listened to the Loshon Harah by the spies about the Land and spent the night crying. HaShem is speaking to Moshe and Aaron and telling them that "enough is enough". I, Hashem will destroy the nation and make a better nation using Moshe and Aaron. In this talk Hashem uses the word YeNaATzuNi referring to the Children of Israel who left Egypt. Learn from this another reason not to listen to Loshon Harah or even believe it to be true, if/when you hear it. Also learn the spiritual lesson written below. Who are people who hate? It is some of the people who Moshe took with him out of Egypt! Or is it US! Remember each verse in the Torah speaks to us personally today. Also the Talmud teaches that each generation that does not rebuild the Temple and bring the Final redemption it is the same as if they destroy the Temple and delay the redemption again and again and again. Are you a Nazi? Do you see the Temple in Jerusalem being rebuilt? No. Then according to the Talmud and Hashem we are the YeNaATZuNI. The people who hate. I hope you are trying to change this aspect of yourself! Shabbat Shalom chanoch P. S. We are seeking donations to automate the return of Tikune information based on your English Birth Date.
