This weeks Portion is called Toldot! Normally this word is translated as Generations. In my opinion, It has a more extensive meaning that the concept of Generations. In modern Hebrew it also means offspring, as well as derivative, consequence, and sequel. In my understanding it also means lineage as in the description of my families line of history. An example would be Chanoch Ben Yaacov Ben Hershel Ben . . ..
Toldot appears 2 times in the Tanach, spelled completely (with both Vav's).It is 7 times in Tananch spelled without the second Vav. 3 Times without the First Vav and 1 time without either Vav.
When a word is missing a Vav in the Tanach it is called defective and indicates something is missing in that section of Torah. It always comes to teach us a lesson. The only two times it is spelled with both Vav's is once in Beraishit, describing the generations of Adam and once in the book of Ruth when it describes the lineage of King David from Perez (one of the twins born to Tamar and Yehudah).
So what can we learn from the missing Vav in our portion. There are two Vav's in Toldot to teach us that there are two channels from the spiritual world - one is from the good side and one from the negative side.I think the lesson of the missing Vav is to be careful that we only follow the one Righteous path and not the path of Negativity.
There are 106 verses in this portion and the code word is Ayin Lamed Vav. this can be translated as "On six", or Eye on 36, or He Rises.
The essence of this portion is to realize that all of our world is mixed energy - the mixture that is represented by the twins Jacob and Esav. Everything in our world has a spiritual essence and a physical form. This is what Jacob an Esav represents. In the spiritual world one can not mix energies but in the physical world we can. Our work in this world is to "see" the spiritual while we enjoy the physical.
Kabbalah teaches the essence of negativity is "the desire to receive for oneself alone". The essence of Good is to have a "desire to receive in order to share". This means it is good to want more but one can only hold it when one is receiving it with the consciousness of sharing. In the past month - the worlds desire went bust - as evidenced by the financial markets. They are indicating that people desired but without the consciousness of sharing - this is why the markets are down. Learn to change your consciousness and youwill see a return to the previous levels of markets and do enough transformation and you will see the previous markets were much too small - as HaShem wants to share more with us.
There is also a small Koof in this portion. it is in the word Katzte. This word means "to detest". By making the Koof small in this word we deprive energy to the negative side. It is recomended that the reader stop at this Koof and allow us to meditate on stopping the flow of energy to the negative side. To better understand this - the koof is the letter that goes below the line to feed the Negative side - enough to survive but not enough to grow strong. Of course we tend to give to the other side too much energy.
Kabbalah teaches (from the Zohar and the ARI) that one should give "a little bit" of Challah to the other side. In fact the first slice should go to the negative side. No one should eat it but it should be thrown away as it belongs to the other side. When the Other side does not get its due it works to get more and stays in your life. When it is given its due then it is satisfied and leaves that person alone. What is its due? a little bit. The message of the small Koof. Most people struggle with the concepts written into the book of Job. When one realizes that Job was a reincarnation of Terach - that Job was an advisor to Pharoh who suggested the Jewish Nation be worked as slaves, and that Job both as himself and Terach never gave his due to the negative side - then it is easier to understand the messages in the Book of Job.
If you are the person saying HaMotzei on Shabbat and Hagim, then give the first slice to the negative side so that people participating with you will not be troubled by the negative side looking for its due. If the person does not do so then you do so from your share.
