Week of January 4, 2008 Shabbat Beraishit Vayechi Tevet 14, 5769
Greetings! This weeks portion is Vayechi. It is also the last of the First Book of the 5 Books of Moshe. It is called Beraishit or Genesis (secular Name). Vayechi means will live but do to the connecting Vav at the beginning of the word it gets translated as Lived (past tense). There are 85 verses in the parasha. This is the word Pey Hay which means mouth. In Hebrew Man is described as a speaking animal. Our mouth is how we live - - or if used wrongly stop living. There is also an unusual item in the scroll this week. It is the second of the 6 columns that do not start with a vav. This column starts with a Yood. The six columns that do not start with a vav are Bet Yood Hay Shin Mem Vav. When we get to the last one we will explain how a vav is not a vav. If you want immediate information i refer you to the earlier emails. This is a very coded / concealed Parasha. It has many midrashim to explain the prophesies about each Tribe of the Jewish Nation. Each of these deal with aspects of redemption. but prior to redemption we need to heal. So.... There is an element of healing in this Parasha. Yaacov was the first person to get ill before he died. Prior to this people sneezed and their soul left there body and they died. Prior to Yaacov's death which is not truly a death. Yaacov said to HaShem it would be good if i have a sign that i am leaving this world. This would allow me time to arrange my affairs and not burden my family with the planning for the funeral or be away from the funeral as i was with my Mother Rivka's maid Devorah's funeral. HaShem to Yaacov - That is a good idea. So when the time came for Yaacov to leave the physical plane of existence he got sick. By hearing this part of the weekly reading we receive a vaccine against illness of any type. You just have to have certainty that what is being said here is truth. What do you have to loose. If i am wrong you are no worse off than you were before. If i am right and you come to the synagogue and hear the Torah reading you have the opportunity to receive the energy of healing or at least a vaccine from becoming ill. It is your choice. There is also more opportunity for receiving more of the energy of Hashem. There are 5 Books of Moshe. There are 10 spherot - but 6 of these relate to 1. Therefore there are also 5 basic spherot. They are Keter (crown/seed), Chochma (Wisdom), Binah (uderstanding), Zeir Anpin (Aramaic for small face- this includes the 6 that is 1), and Malchut (Kingdom). There is a relationship between each of the 5 books and each of the 5 Spherot. Beraishit which is Genesis relates to Keter. Shmot (Names)which is Exodus relate to Chochma. Vayikra (and he called) which is Leviticus relates to Binah. Bamidbar (desert) which is Numbers relates to Zeir Anpin and Devarim (words) which is Deuteronomy relates to Malchut. Between each book there is a space that is 4 lines wide. Each column has 32 lines scored by the scribe before he starts. There are 4 types of spaces. Each type of space represents a level of energy from HaShem. There is a space of 1 Letter - this is unusual and his only between last weeks portion of Vayegash and this weeks portion of Vayechi. i mentioned this last week. There is a space of 9 Letters. There is a space of 16 Letters. and there is a space of 4 Lines. When we finish the reading of each of the 5 books we have a custom to say CHazak, CHazak, CHazak V'nitnazek. In a Kabbalistic synagogue there is also a Hagba. A lifting of the Torah so all can see. Look for the space between the books. Look for the Light of HaShem. When one says CHazak - Chet Zion Koof, one is saying the number 115. When we say it 3 times we are saying in a concealed way the name Moshe which is 345 spelled Mem Shin hay. The Kabbalist use this mediation to unify all of the Torah readings in this book. and manifest it when they say V'nitnazek. V'nitnazek means be strong. We are saying Moshe be strong.
