Week of December 14, 2008 Shabbat Vayeshev Kislev 23, 5769
Greetings! The name of the Parasha is Vayeshev which translates as "And he settled". On the simple story level the parasha relates the selling of Joseph by his brothers and the story of Joseph while in Egypt seperated by the story of Tamar and Yehudah which is the seed level of The Mashiach. Our sages teach that if Jacob would not have settled - meaning be satisified with his spiritual level, he would not have to experience the chaos of Dinah's RApe and The selling of Joseph in quite the same way. There are 112 verses in this portion. We wrote about 112 last week. This is the river Yabok,that Yaacov, His wives (all 4), His children (all 13 or 25), and all of his possessions crossed over prior to the wrestling with "a man". I refer you to last weeks parasha to learn about the level of Yabok. This number of verses helps us understand the essence of the energy of this week. It is the ninth week since the beginning of the Torah reading cycle that started with Beraishit. 9 is a number that relates to the Spherah of YeSod which translates as Foundation. The Sepherah of Yesod represents a funnel. It gathers all of the spiritual beneficense and brings / channels it into our physical world. It also gathers all of our prayers, and desires, and requests and channels them into the spiritual worlds to start the flow of spiriutal beneficense. The essence of this weeks energy is "Process". Process is the journey from beginning to end within a frame of reference. Most people refer to process as living. We get excited about something new. We get excited about reaching a goal. Process is the path in the middle. Why don't we get just as excited about the path/process in the middle? Because we fall to the illusion in our world. We don't see the true reality - that this world is not the beginning of anything nor is it the end of anything - it exists to give us a place for us to do process - to change ourselves. There is a spiritual law revealed to us in the Sefer Yetzirah that states "the end is in the beginning". In our physical world - when we start something we do not know what the end will be. We imagine our goal and we hope that the process will bring about this goal. Yet we do not truly see what is the end. This is not true in the spiritual world. The end is known from the beginning. This means that the selling of Joseph was a beginning that was meant to bring the children of Israel into Egypt where they would grow to be a Am Gadol (a great nation) and then would be redeemed and brought to the Land of Israel where they would make mistakes and be "vomited" out of the Land into exile in all areas and lands of the world. And then be brought back from exile even if it means from the ends of heaven itself. The redemption is happening in the beginning, in the end, and in the space in between which we call process or life. The law "the end is in the beginning" teaches us to Love the process because Hashem is the guiding force behind all that happens. The cycle of the Torah and the Cycle of Life and the Cycle of Joy and Happiness and the cycle of depression and lack all come to teach us spiritual growth. When we reach those spiritual plateaus and we rest upon our spiritual accomplishments that is when we loose --- ourselves. Just as Yaacov experienced his loss of Joseph and his pain from Dinah's rape. There are dots over the word Et (Aleph and Tav) in Chapter 33 Verse 4. As we discussed last week. Dots over all of the letters in a word instruct us about spiritual laws. The word ET has no English translation. The word ET is explained on one level as a way for someone to know which is the direct object in a Hebrew sentence. In English and other languages we do not need this pointer. In Hebrew it is necessary to have this word ET. This word represents all of the energy which is represented by the Hebrew Aleph Bet because ET is spelled Aleph - the first Letter; Tav - the last Letter; Therefore it includes all potential energies within it. In all of these energies we have beginning - Alpeh; We have end - Tav; and we have the balance of the remaining 20 letters - all of the enegies in our worlds. Please do not settle but continue to grow / change yourself to be a better person today than you were yesterday. This is the process of life! This is the end that is in the beginning!
