The Parasha is called Vayeshev which translates "as he settled". Come learn the effect of resting on your laurels! There are 4 spaces in this Parasha. This indicates a connection to the 4 phases of the creative process as taught by Rabbi Ashlag. What is the creative process? Science has spent a number of manhours to build an understanding of the creative process. Science has requested / forced autopsies on people considered creative (such as Albert Einstein) in order to understand the physical difference in people that makes someone creative. In my opinion this is a waste of time since the creative process is described and illustrated by the Tree of Life Glyph. There are 10 Spherot and 22 lines that connect them within the Glyph. Another method of visualizing this Glyph is to see it as 5 levels (Keter, Chochma, Binah, Zeir Anpin, and Malchut). Lastly the Tree of Life is explained by Rabbi Ashlag has the creative process which takes 4 steps or phases. Please see the blog to learn more about the 4 Phases. This Parasha has 3 basic stories - all of which have different aspects to the building or creating of the Nation of Israel. The 3 stories are 1)Jacob settling near Schem, 2) The visit to a "prostitute" Tamar by Yehudah who did not follow through with the ritual of Yibun and Tamar found it necessary to "trick" him into creating / continuing the line of King David and ultimatley the LIne of Mashiach, and 3) Joseph being sold into slavery into Egypt. All 3 stories have relate to the Nation of Israel and also our political and social lives today. Story 1 deals with the development of the 12 Tribes within Israel. It also relates to how the Nation of Israel goes about building the Nation of Israel in our modern age. Story 2 deals with the Line of Mashiach. How does Mashiach relate to your personal life today? Story 3 deals with the development of the Nation of Israel outside of the Land of Israel. One half of the People of Israel live in the nation called America. There are 10 lost tribes spread throughout the balance of the world. How these nations relate to each other is revealed within this part of the story. This is why there are 4 spaces which occur in this Parasha. There are 2 dots over the word ET or Aleph Tav in verse 12 of Chapter 37. As we have discussed dots appear 10 times in 10 different Parashiot. They represent the 7 days of a week that is the first week in the New Year. I have not read which day of the week this relates to. I think it is the 8 day which this year would be Shabbat. Remember this reading of these dots help us to do Tshuvah for the things we might have done "wrong" during the First Shabbat of the year. I would like to look in more detail at this verse Chapter 37 Verse 12. The English translation of the verse is "Now, his brothers went to pasture their fathers flock in Shechem." This verse has the 2 dots and we have a midrash that explains the two dots as explaining the Scheina's connection to this selling of Joseph into Egypt. One question we can ask about this verse is Why do we need to know that they went to Shechem? Another question to ask is why do we know that their work was that of a shepherd? The answer to both questions relate to the spiritual job of the People of Israel. The concept of a flock is a group of animals usually (in the Torah) Sheep or Goats. Both terms the Zohar teach relate to types of people. ONe type comes from the Right Column and one type comes from the Left Column. The spiritual job of the People of Israel is to balance these two types of Nations. Shechem has a gematria of 360. When the final letter is counted as 600 the gematria becomes 920. One understainding of the final letter gematria is that it applies to the period of time called the "birthpangs of Mashiach". Part of the Jewish spiritual work is to light 36 candles during the Holiday of Chanuka which this Parasha always appears around. Either the Shabbat before or the Shabbat of Chanuka. 36 times 10 is 360. This indicates a connection to the Holiday as well as a complete vessel of 10 Spherot. 920 represents 92 times 10. 92 is the unification of the spiritual and physical worlds plus the Colel. (26 - Tetragramaton, 65 - the name Adonai, and 1 - the Colel = 92). Again showing a complete vessel. Shechem is a hint at the spiritual work of the Nation of Israel and that is why this verse is necessary at this moment of the story of Jacob, Joseph, and the other 10 Tribes. One other spiritual law that is important to learn from this Parasha. Joseph utilized great restriction in how he dealth with his desire/lust for Potiphar's wife. Yet afterward he is immediatley plunged into jail. Where is the reward for his restriction? What we learn from this question and this story is to realize that the process of changing our Movies takes two steps. Restriction and Falling. Falling is a spiritual concept that says one must go down in order to go higher. Without the falling and without the restriction one is playing out the existing movie. There is no way to change that existing movie without restriction. There is no way to go higher without first falling. Kabbalah teaches that the one does not have to go through the physical falling like Joseph if one learns about consciousness. Please see the Yeshshem blog about consciousness to understand this term from a spriitual frame of reference. Finally, know that the purpose of hearing this Parasha is to help you reveal the light of God in your life during this the darkest moment in the Physical year. This is because this is the deepest and shortest part of the daylight hours during the year. While this year is not as close to the Winter Solstice as other years, the above statements are still true. Kol Tuuv Shabbat Shalom Enjoy the Reading! P. S.
