Hag Chanuka is rapidly approaching! Are you looking for Spiritual Gifts? Check out the Spiritual Gifts link on the Yeshshem website, please! This week the Parasha of Vayishlach וישלח is read. It is my birth Parasha! One can find many hints in his birth Parasha about His or Her Tikune. Do you know how to find your Birth Parasha and what day of the week you were born? This will lead you to your Aliya connection which adds additional meaning to your hints. Donations during the Holiday of Chanuka will give you this information and some suggestions as to what some of the hints are about. (This is a vow from Yeshshem). Vayishlach is always read during the month of Kislev. The essence of this Parasha is Hatred! Please read the last two years emails to understand why this is true. So what does Hatred have to do with Miracles? Read below! Torah Readings: Genesis Chapter 32 Verse 4 to Chapter 36 Verse 43. There are 154 Verses and the code word is קליטה. This word means absorption, reception, to comprehend, or striking roots. The question to ask ourselves from this information is "Are we absorbing Hatred or a protection shield from the hearing of the Parasha?" Your consciousness determines the answer to this question! Where will your consciousness be this Shabbat? Remember the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov - "You are where your thoughts are at!". I hope it will be on Love! (See Below to understand this statement). There are 9 spaces in the Parasha. One is an unusual space which we will discuss below. Maftir: Chapter 36 Verse 40 to 43. This is 4 Verses with 1 space. Haftara: Sephardim and Ashkenazim are the same Haftara: Obadyah Chapter 1 Verse 1 to 21. There is only 1 Chapter, of the Prophecies of Obadyah, remembered/written in the Tanach. Obadyah has many more prophecies than this one chapter. The sages who codified the Sefer of the Naviim (prophets) only included Prophecies that apply to each person in each generation. They excluded Prophecies that applied only to his own generation. There are spiritual meanings concealed in the number of verses and spaces read in each weeks Parasha. This chapter of Obadyah has 21 Verses which is 3 times 7. The 7 lower Sephirot and the 3 columns (Sharing, Receiving, and Balance). It is also the gematria of the Name of God Ehiyeh אהיה. There is 1 Space in the Scroll of the Prophets. Most people do not realize that there is a separate scroll of the book of Prophets which has spaces, large and small letters, and even dots over letters just like the Torah Scroll. The 21 Verses and the 1 Space relate to the antidote for hatred which is the unity of the Sephirot, The unity created by Right Left and Central columns and the unity of oneness. Dots: There are 6 dots over the word Vayishakayhu וישקהו which translates as "And he kissed him". These dots have to do with the difference between love and hate. Please see below! Large or Small Letters: There are no large or small letters in either reading. Verses Written and Spoken differently: In the Scroll, sometimes words are written one way and are read or spoken another way. Chapter 36 Verse 5 and also Verse 14 the word which in this case is a name is written יעיש while it is spoken יעוש. Why is this necessary and what spiritual lesson is to be learned? The Baal Haturim teaches that the written Yood hints at the fact that there were 10 Nations led by Esav's descendants that the Torah calls Edom, who did participate in the destruction of the Temple. They are described in Pslam 86 Verse 6 to 9 as 1)Edom, 2) Ishmaelites, 3) Moav, 4) Hagrites, 5)Gebal,6) Ammon, 7)Amalek,8) Philista (Philistines or the modern day Palestinians), 9) some inhabitants of Tyre, and 10)Assyria. The above explanation seems to be physical, yet it is also a spiritual explanation when one delves into the names of these 10 nations and learns about their attributes which will apply to spiritual lessons. One example is Gebal spelled גבל. This word means to border on, and also to mix. The spiritual lesson relates to establishing borders or limits in our lives as well as limit our mixing of energies as this is detrimental to our spiritual growth. As promised, this year i will give some insights into the Haftarot. It is easy to explain the connection of the Parasha to the Haftara on both the physical and spiritual levels. This is because Obadyah is a Ger Tzedek (Righteous Stranger). On the physical level people say that the Prophecy is read because Obadyah is a convert from Edom. Read below for the spiritual explanation. Understand the word Ger גר has had many meanings over the centuries. Sometimes it means stranger and in the Talmud it means convert. To the ARI in discussing reincarnation it means the relationship between the Nefesh and Ruach. Obadyah was a descendant of Eliphaz the Teimanite, the companion of Job. This is taught by Yalkut Shimoni - and that he received Torah from Elijah the Prophet. Obadiah prophesied in the time of Ahab king of Israel and Yehoshaphat king of Judah . He lived in the kingdom of Israel under the rule of Ahab and Jezebel - he was Ahab's chamberlain - yet he resisted their evil influence. The rabbis pointed out that whereas Abraham was described only as "fearing God" (Genesis 22:12), Obadiah was characterized as "fearing God VERY MUCH" (I Kings 18:3; Sanhedrin 39b). Although most Prophets are Israeli, there are a few Prophets who are not Jewish. In the Torah, there is Bilaam and Obadyah. Some say the reason Obadiah attained prophesy was due to the merit of his self-sacrifice to save the true prophets whom Jezebel sought to kill. He hid one hundred prophets in two caves and after using up his own considerable wealth to feed them, he borrowed on interest from King Yehoram, signing over his own children as collateral for the loan (II Kings 4:1). Obadiah's prophecy relates mainly to the nation from which he came: Edom . "The Holy One blessed be He said: Let one who dwelled between two villains (Ahab and Jezebel) yet did not learn from their deeds come to prophesy against Esau, who dwelled between two Tzaddikim (Isaac and Rebecca) and did not learn from their deeds". Obadiah's prophecy ends with the great salvation of Israel at the end of days and the revelation of God's glorious kingship over all the world. Some additional comments: Some say that Obadyah fed 150 Righteous Prophets. In the Haftara, that we read on Parasha Vayeira, it opens with a women asking for help after her husband dies leaving her in debt with her children at risk. The midrash says this women is the wife of Obadyah! Since Rashi says it is a Halacha for Esav to hate Jacob (see last years email), it is difficult to understand what it says in the Haftara when Obadyah says to Edom Verses 10 to 14:Hebrew: English: 10.For the violence done to thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever. 11. In the day that thou didst stand aloof, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them. 12. But thou shouldest not have gazed on the day of thy brother in the day of his disaster, neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress. 13. Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of My people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have gazed on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity. 14. Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress. To understand the message in Obadyah one needs to understand relationship between cause and effect. It is the plan of creation that the Jewish Nation goes into exile. The purpose is to elevate sparks using the metaphor of the ARI and the Baal Shem Tov. The Prophet is speaking to the Edomites and essentially saying you did not have to make the lives of the Jews so exceedingly difficult. For this extra effort you will have the effect of being destroyed (Has V'Shalom). What are we to learn from this? Foregiveness! for all of the harm that we have received over the generations! This is truly learning Vayahavta Reacha Camocha - Love your Brother as Yourself! Since the other nations are our students (learning about Hashem and how Hashem wants all of us to act). It is time for us to foregive the Edomites. This will sweeten the judgment that will manifest upon the Edomites. This may be the lesson that the Jewish Nation needs to learn. When we react to our enemies aggression and fail to understand that their aggression is coming from our not doing our spiritual work during Sukkoth (See earlier emails about Shabbat Sukkot), we actually are the cause of this aggression, yet the Prophet is saying that the effect will be on the Nation of Edom. This is not the way of the perfectly just system at work in our world. By learning to foregive the Edomites for their actions that appeared to hurt us, we become the cause of their salvation from the Prophecy. This is the growth that Hashem wants from his children of Israel. To grow from children into adults. To Forgive the Edomites and learn true cause and effect. We must realize that The prophecy of Obadyah is not meant for Edom, it is meant for the children of Israel to learn to forgive their bothers the edomites! When this happens it will be a step towards Mashiach and will actually mean that the destruction of Edom will not have to happen which will be better for the world and especially the Children of Israel. Lets turn out attention to the Parasha. Vayishlach וישלח translates as he will send or he will send away. The leading Vav changes the tense to be the past so it becomes he sent or he sent away. What is the difference between he sends or he sends away? Away implies outside of yourself. The implication is that the Jacob sends messengers (Angels on the spiritual and men on the physical) away from himself and towards Esav. Yet, as we are to learn to understand the Torah, both Jacob and Esav are code words for character traits with in ourselves. Jacob represents the idea of Love and sharing and Esav repesents the idea of Hate. These are opposites. or are they? Hate is the absence of love not its opposite. Please reread that sentence. It is hard to understand considering Western Society percieves love and hate as opposites. Yet, the ultimate Good is Love. Anything less than the ultimate good is considered a form of Hate. This is what we need to learn from this parasaha. The Baal Shem Tov teaches that someone you consider an enemy actually has parts of your soul captured within his soul or vice a versa. If one works on being close to his enemy he actually recovers or discovers himself! Let us learn some other spiritual lessons! Look at Verse 35 Verse 22: Hebrew: ויהי בשכן ישראל בארץ ההוא וילך ראובן וישכב את-בלהה פילגש אביו וישמע ישראל ויהיו בני-יעקב שנים עשר English: And it came to pass, while Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: What most people do not ask is If Reuben committed adultery with Bilha how can he be Righteous and still be considered one of the twelve tribes of Israel? The answer comes from one of the spaces in this Parasha which teaches us a spiritual lesson. The space appears like this: And it came to pass, while Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard of it. (right here is the space) Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: Does the Torah lie when it says he lay with Bilha? Was there adultery or not? The midrash explains that on the level of righteousness that Reuben had reached he should have known better than to interfere in his fathers love life and when he moved Jacob's bed Bilha was sleeping upon it and he felt "lust in his heart" to quote President Jimmy Carter. Since he did not follow through on his thoughts he was still one of the Tribes as the Torah attests immediately afterwords. Yet on his level he should have guarded his thoughts and thus he lost the Rights to the First Born, which was transferred to Joseph, who the Midrash says should have been the first born from the beginning. This comes from the idea that Jacob was tricked by Lavan into marrying Leah. When he slept with Leah he was thinking it was Rachel. The Kabbalah teaches that the soul that is drawn from the Zvug (intercourse) between husband and wife is based on their consciousness and how close to unity is the consciousness of the couple. So what is the spiritual lesson we learn from the 6 dots and also from this space and this story about Reuben? Love and Hate are states of consciousness which we have the power to control. While we are not judged for our thoughts only our actions, as we raise our consciousness our thoughts need to be controlled. We also learn a lesson about judgment as well. The spiritual law is that we are judged only when we have judged. (Actually our own words or actions are used to judge us in the spiritual courts). If we control our thoughts and do not judge than no power in Heaven or Hell (Be it HaShem or Satan) can judge us ever. They have no tools to exercise judgment upon us. (They have no words that we said to say back to us). This world is perfectly just! what you say is what you will hear. What you do is what will happen to you. Reuben did not commit adultery on the physical level. Yet these stories are teaching us it is not ok to sleep with your spouse and fantasize about a movie star, as western society teaches us. What type of child will a couple bring into the world if the husband is thinking about Marilyn Monroe and the wife is thinking about Clark Gable? Mental adultery is just as harmful to the world as physical adultery. Be careful what you think! Your thoughts can be harmful to yourself! The Zohar always relates Anger to Idol worship. What is the cause of Hatred? It is always anger. So Hatred is actually idol worship. Hatred is the absence of love as taught above. We can now begin to get an inkling of why HaShem feels so strongly about idol worship. Idol worship is defined by the Zohar as follows: idol worship is allowing anything physical or spiritual to mean more to you than your desire to be close to HaShem. Do you love Hashem? Do you hate (feel burdened by) the Mitzvoth (Has V'Shalom)? Where is your consciousness when you hear the Torah? Do you want to get closer to HaShem or do you feel burdened and want to leave ASAP? It is your choice - you ARE able to control your thoughts! In fact, it is imperative that you learn to control your thoughts because you are where you think. One final point about Love and the dots over Vayishakeyhu (And He Kissed Him - referring to the reunion of Jacob and Esau): Jacob crossed over the River Yabok יבק and ended up fighting with the Angel of Esav also known as Satan. This information comes from the Midrash. As taught in previous emails (2 years ago) Yabok has a gematria of 112 and represents the unity of all of Gods Names. What is unity? It is love! We learn this from the number 13 which is the Gematria of the word Echad (meaning one or unity) and Ahavah (love). Hatred is the absense of love which is the absence of unity which is separation! As long as you do not strive to control your thoughts , you are keeping the world in a state of separation. YOU ARE THE ONE WHO STOPS THE COMING OF THE MASHIACH.
