Week of September 28, 2008 Shabbat Vayelech Tishrai 5, 5769 | |
---|---|
The portion of Vayelech is read this week as the first Parasha of this year. It is the shortest portion in the Torah. it is only 30 verses in length. Usually it is read with either Nitzavim before Rosh HaShana or with Hazinu after Rosh HaShana. Vayelech means "went". Actually it means "will go". We have a tradition that tells us when a portion begins with a vav it tells us to transform the past tense of the verb to the future or the future tense of the verb to the past. So the verse is translated - Moshe went and spoke all these words to all of Israel. When it should be "And Moshe will go and speaks all these words to all of Israel. This transformation of tenses is a significant but little understood aspect of the Torah. Please note that the full verse does not need this word to be a complete sentence. It reads just as proper as Moshe spoke all of these words to all of Israel. With the word Vayelech the verse is translated as Moshe went and spoke all of these words to all of Israel. The next verse has a number of subjects. The verse is "He Said to them, I am one hundred and twenty years old today; I can no longer go out and come in, for HaShem has said to me, "you shall not cross this Jordan". Ask yourself do i need to know that Moshe is 120 years old? Is "this Jordan" a physical river or some level of consciousness. How do you relate to the Torah? When one puts the idea of past tense and future tense being interchangable with going out and coming in as a reference to spiritual transition as well as referring to physical things - one gets the idea of the essence of this portion. It is teaching (30 verses) about the illusion of the physical world. Each word in the Torah has a meaning on the physical level and another meaning on the spiritual level. This portion comes to remind us of this during the 22 days of Holidays in Tishrai that represent the process of birth to Maturity that take place for this new Year. Another anomoly in this portion is in Chapter 31 verse 28. All of the columns in the Torah Scroll start with a Vav except 6. These 6 spell out Bet Yood Hay Shin Mem Vav. Which can be translated "in / with Yood Hay is his name." I don't know if you noticed i wrote that these 6 letters are not VAv's so what is a Vav doing in them? Kabbalah/Judaism teaches, as science is beginning to teach, Our consciousness produces our reality. if i see a Vav and say it is not a Vav then it is not a Vav. This is because all of our physical world is an illusion. Thus all of our pain and suffering in this physical world is illusionary and there fore disappears. There fore the changes of the tenses from past to future and future to past comes to teach us also about this illusion. So what is real about our world. Not the material things but the Love we feel for each other. Our good deeds or Mitzvoth are real and do not disappear but only when they are powered by Love. This is the ony thing that is real in our illusionary physical world. The energy of this weeks portion that usually happens on Shabbat Shuva, The Sabbat of return is teaching us about the unity of all. All time and all people. People usually think of themselves as spiritual when it is time to do spiritual things and physical when it is time to work at our daily job. This portion comes to teach us that spiritual times are at all times. When we go to work we can not leave our spirituality in the synagogue. When we go to work we need to bring our spirituality with us. When we return to God it can only be when we also are doing our physical work in a spiritual manner. This is a thing that is very difficult for people. Have i done Tshuva when i think of the Synagogue and my daily work as seperate from each other. I leave you to answer that question for yourself. Remember 30 verses is the Gematria of Lamed - which means teacher. How can you be a light to the nations if you are not being spiritual when you are with the other nations at your job, or walking on the way, or planning your next financial success. Spirituality is 24 / 7. When we are spiritual 24/7 we have returned to HaShem! Yet we can still get closer to HaShem by continuing our spiritual work. This Parasha also has the last Mitzvah written in the Torah. This Mitzvah is to "Sing/Write a Torah". The verse is Deuteronomy chapter 31 verse 19 and actually is "Write this song for yourselves....." Today our Rabbi's explain that commissioning a Torah Scroll fulfills this Mitzvah; Participating in the installation of a new Torah Scroll in a synagogue fulfills this Mitzvah; Purchasing a printed Chumash or Tanach to be used in Torah Study fulfills this Mitzvah. The King of Israel has a Mitzvah to write 2 Torah Scrolls - one is to be carried with him day and night. One explanation of the Kings Mitzvah is to remind him that he is a servant of the people and also a servant of HaShem. This helps reduce his potential ego. I highly recomend that each person fulfill the Mitzvah of writing a Scroll in the way that best suits their needs. At the least if you don't have a Tanach in Hebrew and your native language - purchase one. Then spend at least 5 minutes a day looking at the Parasha. this can be the start of removing chaos from your life.
