Parasha Nitzavim

In the Torah

Torah: Parasha Nitzavim - Deuteronomy - Devarim Chapter 29 Verse 9 to Chapter 30 Verse 20

Haftara: Isaiah Chapter 61 Verses 10 - Chapter 63 Verse 9

The inner essence of the Parasha

There are 40 Verses in this Parasha. 40 is the gematria of Hebrew word Levavo לבבו. This translates as "His Hearts". Another translation can be "Next is a Heart" or "Heat is next".

Note that 40 Verses is one of the smallest parashas of the year. We also know that less is more in spirituality.

The essence - energy of Parasha Nitzavim

This parasha is always read the last Shabbat before Rosh HaShana.

In the physical illusionary world sometimes things disappear. Things like memories when we temporarily can no remember or when someone falls to the disease of Alzheimers. Another disappearance is when a tooth falls out yet when we are children the tooth grows back. We know there is no disappearance in spirituality. The essence of these descriptions helps us understand the essence of the Parasha Nitzavim. This parasha gives us the ability to remove the covers on our sights. It helps us "see" the truth about ourselves as we go into the "Days of Awe" - the beginning of the year 5778.

There are also 2 anomalies in these 40 verses. There is a large Lamed in verse Devarim Chapter 29:27 and 11 dots over 11 letters in verse Devarim 29:28. Click the link below to learn more about these anomalies.

The Large Lamed has 70 explanations just like every aspect of Torah. One is that the Lamed is written large since we do not announce the new moon for Tishrai on the last Shabbat in Elul. The Lamed is the letter that creates the astrological sign of Libra. The word that has the large Lamed is Walashlecaim. The gematria of this basic word is 400. The large lamed is telling us "teach about the 400 levels of negativity and positivity. These are just a few examples.

The eleven dots are over the Hebrew words "to us and to our children". These eleven dots relate to the energy of Yom Kippur. They hint to the quieting / control of the Eleventh dot which is the negative system. The letters under these 11 dots actually translate as "see (truth about) us and our children". We also know that the Torah uses the world children as a code word for reincarnation. Thus the hint is telling us that "see (truth about) us and our past and future reincarnations." This is my opinion.

The Haftara is the last of 7 Haftara readings referred to as weeks of comfort. In this Haftara the Nation of Edom is defeated. The Zohar explains that Edom is a code word for our own reactive behavior. This reactive behavior is best controlled - defeated prior to Rosh HaShanah and not during the new year of the "goat" in 5777.

Commentary for the year 5778

This week the Parasha is a double Parasha. Some years they belong together and other years they don't.

This year as in all years NItzavim is read as the last Shabbat before Rosh HaShana. This final Parasha is there to give us the ability to push past the illusion and be able to see the truth about our own actions and non-actions so that we will be able to see what was the right thing to do with all of those wrong actions and non - actions from last year.

Moshe wrote some unusual letters and dots in this Parasha that helps us in our preparation for the New Year, relating to doing our Teshuvah. In the first Aliyah of the double reading or the Third Aliyah of the individual reading in Verse 27 there is a large letter Lamed in the word Vayishlichem which translates as "cast them out". This large lamed goes above the line - metaphorically connecting to the energy store of the Sefirah of Binah which translates as understanding. In my opinion, this large Lamed gives us the understanding of how we have hurt others and teaches us to approach all those we hurt to ask true forgiveness.

In Verse 28 there are Eleven dots over the words Lanu Ulvanaynu Ayin. These words translate as "us and our children see". These 11 dots connect to the 11 components of the Ketoret - the Incense. The Ketoret brings us closer to HaShem, which is the result of our doing Teshuvah.

The Parasha Vayelech when not connected as a double portion is the Parasha read on Shabbat Teshuvah, which is the Shabbat between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur. As one can readily see that both Nitzavim and Vayelech are connected to Teshuvah. The Large Lamed is also in Vayelech through the 30 Verses which is the number of Verses in Vayelech. The letter Lamed has a regualar gematria of 30.

One additional important thing to learn about Vayelech. Moshe says among other things in Chapter 31 Verse 2 "I can no longer go out and come in ...." The meaning of this, in my opinion, is when someone reaches a spiritual level that there is no longer a difference between There outer face and their inner face; they have removed the boundaries between their internal essence and their external essence. This is the true meaning of unity of all things.

Always remember "when you stand up before" Rosh HaShana;

Always remember "when you stand up before" the new year;

Always remember "when you stand up before" HaShem

It is after you have completed your Teshuvah.

Zohar Portion of Chok Israel

In our generation it is taught that we will have a difficulty with the time to truly study all 10 levels of Torah. The ARI put together a scheule of daily study that generally takes about 1/2 hour or less except for Friday and many people make that additional time up on Shabbat. This schedule is referred to as Chok L'Israel.

Here are links to the 7 daily studies including an English translation of the Zohar portion that refers to the energy of the day. Each day has a link to the Zohar English translation. This translation needs commentary yet i do not have the time yet so be careful in your own personal reading. there is a hidden agenda in the translation.
