SYNOPSIS:

This section tells how God questioned Elijah as to why, after having been so zealous in His service, he was now in hiding. He reminds him that He had, through Moses, given him His Covenant of peace, since Elijah is Pinchas in reincarnation.

Translation

Of Elijah, it is written: "and came and sat down under a broom tree" (I Melachim 19:4). He said: Master of the universe, you sent a woman to Yisrael, Deborah by name, as it is written, "and she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah" (Shoftim 4:5). This is the broom tree ELIJAH SAT UNDER. And she returned them to good conduct, as it is written, "Until I Deborah arose" (Shoftim 5:7). And I have come among them and have spoken loud before them, yet I cannot MAKE THEM REPENT.

chanoch's Commentary

Elijah is teaching that he was unable to bring enough people to repent even when he was utilizing the Light of Devorah. What this teaches is it is easier to motivate people with fear rather than awe or love. This comes from the Name Devorah being left column soul and Eliyahu being a Priest which is a right column soul.

Translation

While he was still sitting, the Holy One, blessed be He, appeared to him. He said to him, '"What are you doing here, Elijah?" (I Melachim 19:9). At first you were accusing and zealous for the Covenant, MEANING DURING THE DAYS OF MOSES. And when I saw that you were zealous for Me through that Covenant, I took it, with the agreement of Moses, and gave it to you, so Moses said, "Behold I give to him My Covenant of peace," (Bemidbar 25:12), AS PINCHAS IS ELIJAH. And now that it is yours, it is not proper for you to denounce it. You should have left your zealousness to Me, as before when THE COVENANT was Mine; and I gave it to another, but did not speak against it'.

chanoch's Commentary

There is a very important lesson here. Just do your work don't question the result. It is never up to you to evaluate your work. Just keep on moving on.

Translation

"What are you doing here (Heb. poh)?" HE ASKS: What is poh? HE ANSWERS: The Holy Covenant is the mouth (Heb. peh) of Hashem. REFERRING TO IT, IT IS WRITTEN: "BEHOLD I GIVE TO HIM MY COVENANT OF PEACE." AND THE HOLY ONE, BLESSED BE HE, SAID TO HIM: 'Since you did not want to let go of your mouth, NAMELY THE MOUTH THAT IS ZEALOUS FOR THE COVENANT, let the mouth THAT I GAVE YOU, NAMELY THE COVENANT OF PEACE, return to the place of that EARLIER mouth', NAMELY TO HASHEM. We have learned that at that moment the present that Moses gave him, NAMELY THE COVENANT OF PEACE, was taken from him. This we have learned from the words: "And went in the strength of that meal...to Horeb the Mountain of Elohim" (I Melachim 19:8), meaning, to ask it from there. HE ASKS: did he ask it from there? ONE ASKS FROM HASHEM. HE ANSWERS: But it was to ask for what he had before from him who inherited this Covenant on the Mountain of Elohim, THAT IS, MOSES. Pinchas is Elijah. Certainly, they are on the same level. Moses said to him: You cannot receive the Covenant of peace from me, but go to the male children of Yisrael, MEANING THE COVENANT OF CIRCUMCISION OF THE MALE CHILDREN OF YISRAEL and from them you will earn THE SECRET OF THE COVENANT, and they will give it to you. And so he did.

chanoch's Commentary

This pasuk is clear as written yet it is still quite mystical. The mystical aspect is why does Eliyahu attend every Brit Milah? The answer is in this pasuk.
