It is best to study the Zohar in the following manner:

SYNOPSIS:

Rabbi Shimon says that when the Holy One created the world He engraved on the upper and the lower worlds the letters of His Holy Name, which hold the secret of the supernal lights. The upper world is concealed in one of these letters; it ascends by means of the secret of infinity, and from this concealment emerges a thin and hidden light. In this light exists its counterpart, the glorious light of creation. When first it was struck, the supernal world emerged and was filled with a light so great that it would be too terrifying for those below to see. In this unknown concealed world live six thousand 'myriads' which are supernal inhabitants and hosts and camps. Only Jacob, who possessed Malchut as his own, received permission to rise to the higher world. And, we learn, Malchut is illuminated by the light of Bina from above. The lower world always has a secret desire for the higher world, being unable to experience it directly as Jacob did.

THE RELEVANCE OF THE PASSAGE:

The letters inscribed below connect us to letters of the Holy Name ×™.×”.ו.×”., which embody the primordial forces of Creation. This awesome luminosity is normally far too intense for a mortal to behold. However, through Jacob "“ who personifies control over physical existence "“ we have a key to unlock the gate to the upper world. Through Jacob, we acquire the vessel necessary to hold this divine energy that shines so brightly in the distant heavens.

א"ר שִׁמְעוֹן, הָא תָּנֵינָן, דְּכַד בָּרָא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא עָלְמָא, גְּלִיף בִּגְלִיפוֹי דְּרָזֵי מְהֵימְנוּתָא, גּוֹ טְהִירִין בְּרָזִין עִלָּאִין, וְגָלִיף לְעֵילָּא וְגָלִיף לְתַתָּא, וְכֹלָּא בְּרָזָא חֲדָא, בְּרָזָא דְּגִלוּפֵי דִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא ידו"ד, דְּשָׁלִיט בְּאַתְווֹי עֵילָּא וְתַתָּא. וּבְרָזָא דָּא אִשְׁתַּכְלָלוּ עָלְמִין, עָלְמָא עִלָּאָה וְעָלְמָא תַּתָּאָה.

Translation

Rabbi Shimon said, We learned that when the Holy One, blessed be He, WHO IS BINAH, created the world, WHICH IS MALCHUT, He engraved His engravings of the secret of the Faith, WHICH IS MALCHUT, into the lights which are the secret of the supernal beings. And He engraved above, IN BINAH, and engraved below, IN MALCHUT; everything is in the secret of the engraving of the Holy Name, YUD HEI VAV HEI that controls by means of its letters above and below, THAT IS, IN BINAH AND MALCHUT, WHICH ARE THE FIRST HEI AND THE LAST HEI OF YUD HEI VAV HEI, SINCE BOTH OF THEM ARE OF THE SAME SHAPE, WHICH IS HEI. The worlds were brought to completion by means of this secret, both the superior world, WHICH IS BINAH, and the lower world, WHICH IS MALCHUT.

chanoch's Commentary

Do you know the difference between completion and perfection? the process to complete creates perfection. This pasuki teaches us that this process which we are in right now will use the 4 letters to create perfection just as they were used in the process of completion.

עָלְמָא עִלָּאָה אִשְׁתַּכְלַל בְּרָזָא דְּאָת י', נְקוּדָה עִלָּאָה קַדְמָאָה, דְּנָפְקָא מִגּוֹ דְּסָתִים וְגָנִיז דְּלָא יְדִיעַ, וְלָא קַיְּימָא לְמִנְדַּע, וְלָא אִתְיְידָע כְּלַל, סְלִיקוּ דְרָזָא דְּאֵין סוֹף, וּמִגּוֹ סְתִימוּ דָּא, נָהִיר נְהִירוּ חַד דָּקִיק וְסָתִים, כָּלִיל בְּגַוֵּיהּ כְּלָלָא דְּכָל נְהוֹרִין. וּבְהַהוּא נְהִירוּ סָתִים, בָּטַשׁ בֵּיהּ מַאן דְּלָא בָּטַשׁ. נָהִיר בֵּיהּ מַאן דְּלָא נָהִיר. וּכְדֵין, אַפִּיק חַד נְהִירוּ, דְּאִיהוּ עִדּוּנָא לְעִדּוּנָא, לְאִשְׁתַּעְשְׁעָא, לְאִתְגַּנְּזָא נְהִירוּ דָּקִיק, וְסָתִים בְּגוֹ הַהוּא נְהִירוּ.

Translation

Tabhe upper world is included in the secret of the letter Yud OF YUD HEI VAV HEI, WHICH INCLUDES ARICH ANPIN AND ABA AND IMA, NAMELY the first upper dot, WHICH IS ARICH ANPIN that emerges from the concealed, the hidden and that which is not known and is not known at all and will not be known. It ascends by MEANS OF the secret of infinity, THE PARTZUF OF ATIK, and from this concealment, FROM ARICH ANPIN, shines a thin and hidden light WHICH IS SUPERNAL ABA AND IMA THAT HAVE TWO ASPECTS OF YESOD, 1) A NARROW PATH AND 2) A CONCEALED WAY, including in itself the generality of all the lights. And in this concealed WAY, THAT IS IN ABA AND IMA, one strikes it who did not yet strike BEFORE, WHEN IT WAS IN SUPERNAL ABA AND IMA. That which did not illuminate in him now illuminates in him. It then produced one light, which is a delight of delight (NAMELY CHOCHMAH OF CHOCHMAH), AND IT IS for pleasure, and to hide the thin light, which is concealed in that light.

There are many items to explain and comment upon in this pasuk. i think the most important aspect is to explain how a dot is infinite. Put a pencil point dot in the middle of a plain white sheet of paper. call the sheet of paper the universe of dots. With only one dot in the center creates the clear idea that this dot is infinite in the rest of the plain sheet of paper which we can call above and within the dot, which we call below, we have infinity since the dot is a circle that is never ending.

וְהַהוּא נְהִירוּ דְּאִיהוּ עִדּוּנָא לְעִדּוּנָא, סָתִים, אִתְקָיָּימוּ וְאִשְׁתָּכְלָלוּ בֵּיהּ שִׁית רְשִׁימִין, דְּלָא יְדִיעָן, בַּר לְהַהוּא נְהוֹרָא דָּקִיק כַּד עָאל לְאִתְגַּנְּזָא, עִדּוּנָא בְּעִדּוּנָא נָהִיר בִּנְהִירוּ.

Translation

Within this light, which is delight of delight and is concealed, six unknown impressions materialized and were completed THROUGH THE CENTRAL COLUMN. THEY ARE NOT REVEALED IN ORDER TO ILLUMINATE, except when that thin light OF ABA AND IMA enters to be concealed, FOR THEN the delight of delight illuminates in its light.

As we learned above delight of delight is Chochmah within Chochmah. The six impressions is Zeir Anpin of Chochmah.

וְהַאי נְהִירוּ דְּנָפַק מִגּוֹ נְהִירוּ דָּקִיק אִיהוּ דְּחִילָא וְאֵמְתָּנִי וְתַקִּיפָא יְתֵירָא, וְאִתְפָּשַּׂט הַאי וְאִתְעָבֵיד עָלְמָא חֲדָא, דְּנָהִיר לְכָל עָלְמִין. עָלְמָא סְתִימָא דְּלָא יְדִיעַ כְּלָל, וּבְגַוֵּיהּ דַּיְירִין שִׁית רִבּוֹא אֶלֶף, דְּאִינּוּן דַּיְירִין וְחֵילִין וּמַשְׁירְיָין עִלָּאִין.

Translation

This light that emerges TO THOSE BELOW from the thin light is awesome and frightful and very strong. AND THIS THIN LIGHT spreads and becomes one world, WHICH IS SUPERNAL ABA AND IMA that illuminates all the worlds. It is a concealed world that is wholly unknown and 60,000,000 of supernal inhabitants and hosts and camps live in them.

The thin light is the Light of Chochmah. The world being described is Atzilut - Emanations. The 60 million inhabitants are all of the potential creations that are built in a hierarchy associated with the six ends of Zeir Anpin.

וְכֵיוָן דְּאַפִּיק לוֹן וְאִשְׁתָּכְלָלוּ כַּחֲדָא כְּדֵין אִיהוּ חִבּוּרָא חֲדָא. וְאִינּוּן רָזָא דְּאָת וי"ו, דְּאִתְחַבָּר בְּהַהוּא עָלְמָא סְתִימָא, וּכְדֵין כְּתִיב, כִּי יַעֲקֹב בָּחַר לוֹ יָהּ. כַּד נָפִיק וי"ו, וְאִשְׁכָלַל מִגּוֹ יָ"הּ, כְּדֵין יִשְׂרָאֵל לִסְגֻלָּתוֹ.

Translation

Once YUD brought them out, they become one joint, YUD-HEI. They are the secret of the letter Vav, which has become attached to that concealed world; AND THIS VAV ALLUDES TO JACOB, as it is written, "For Yah has chosen Jacob to Himself." JACOB CLEAVED UNTO THE MENTIONED NAME YUD-HEI. When the Vav emerges and becomes accomplished through Yud-Hei, MEANING THAT THE LETTER VAV HAS BECOME INDEPENDENT WITH THE MOCHIN OF YUD-HEI AND HAS THE FIRST THREE SFIROT, then it is written, "Yisrael for His peculiar possession," AND IS CALLED YISRAEL RATHER THAN JACOB.

chanoch's Commentary

This pasuk teaches that Zeir Anpin which is Jacob becomes Israel when the upper three Sefirot unify with the lower levels.

שְׁאַר בְּנֵי עָלְמָא, לָא אִתְיְיהִיב לוֹן רְשׁוּ לְסַלְּקָא הָכִי, אֶלָּא לִסְגֻלָּתוֹ, אֲתָר דְּנָטִיל וְכָנִישׁ כֹּלָּא. וְדָא אִיהוּ דַּרְגָּא לְתַתָּא, וּמִגּוֹ דָּא, נַטְלִין לְעֵילָּא, בִּסְתִימוּ דִּרְעוּ, אֲבָל לָא בְּאִתְגַּלְיָא, כְּמָה דְּנָטִיל יַעֲקֹב, הה"ד וְיִקְחוּ לִי תְּרוּמָה.

Translation

None of the other people in the world, EXCEPT FOR JACOB, received permission to rise TO BINAH, TO CLEAVE UNTO YUD-HEI LIKE JACOB, but to His peculiar possession ALONE, which is the place that receives and gathers everything, which is the lower level, NAMELY MALCHUT. From within MALCHUT they receive THE LIGHT OF CHASSADIM of above IN BINAH, WHICH IS THE ASPECT OF LEAH in a hidden desire, but not openly as Jacob does. This is the meaning of, "That they bring Me an offering."
