Zohar Sulam Commentary on Parasha Vayeshev Section 8

It is best to study the Zohar in the following manner:

SYNOPSIS:

This section touches upon the role of providence in the story of Joseph and especially of his sale into slaverysince, when Joseph's brothers sold him, they were in collaboration with the Shechinah.

THE RELEVANCE OF THE PASSAGE:

The longest and strongest master-slave relationship is that between man and his ego. All of us are in bondage to our reactive whims and egocentric desires. We are also prisoners of other people's perceptions of us. Our ego is our taskmaster "“ and the ego is so good at its job, most of us don't even realize we are in bondage. Therefore, the Light of The Creator will send us challenging opportunities to provoke our ego and highlight our self-centeredness. The Light of this passage opens our eyes and shows us the way to freedom by allowing us to recognize life's hardships for what they really"“opportunities to rise above the power of impulse and effect inner transformation.

וַיֵּלְכוּ אֶחָיו לִרְעוֹת אֶת צֹאן אֲבִיהֶם בִּשְׁכֶם. רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אֲמַר, לִרְעוֹת צֹאן אֲבִיהֶם מִבָּעֵי לֵיהּ, מַאי אֶ"ת. נָקוּד מִלְּעֵילָא, לְאַסְגָּאָה עִמְהוֹן שְׁכִינְתָּא, דְּאִיהִי עִמְּהוֹן שַׁרְיָיא, בְּגִין דְּאִינוּן הֲווֹ עֲשָׂרָה, דְּהָא יוֹסֵף לָא הֲוָה עִמְּהוֹן, וּבִנְיָמִין אִיהוּ זְעֵיר בְּבֵיתָא, וּבְגִין כָּךְ אִינוּן הֲווֹ עֲשָׂרָה, וְכַד אָזְלוּ, הֲוַת שְׁכִינְתָּא בֵּינַיְיהוּ, וְעַל דָּא נָקוּד מִלְּעֵילָא.

Translation

"And his brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shchem" (Beresheet 37:12). Rabbi Shimon asks, Why is the particle Et ('the') added? HE ANSWERS, THE PREPOSITION Et has dots over it, which represent the Shechinah, for the Shechinah, named 'Et', dwelt with them as they were a group of ten. WHEREVER THERE ARE TEN MEN, THE SHECHINAH HOVERS ABOVE THEM. They were ten because Joseph was not with them and little Binyamin was at home. When they went, the Shechinah was among them, for which reason there are dots above the particle Et.

chanoch's Commentary

With Rabbi Ashlag's Comments, the pasuk is clear as written. The Zohar and elsewhere indicates that the word Et is a hint to the Shechina when it has dots over the letters and when it does not have dots over the letters.

וּבְגִין כָּך בְּזִמְנָא דְּזַבִּינוּ לֵיהּ לְיוֹסֵף, אִשְׁתַּתָּפוּ כֻּלְּהוּ בַּהֲדֵי שְׁכִינְתָּא, וְאַשְׁתִּיפוּ לָהּ בַּהֲדַיְיהוּ, כַּד עֲבִידוּ אוֹמָאָה, וְעַד דְּאִתְגַּלְּיָיא מִלָּה דְיוֹסֵף, לָא שַׁרְיָא שְׁכִינְתָּא עֲלֵיהּ דְּיַעֲקֹב.

Translation

For that reason, they were in collaboration with the Shechinah when they sold Joseph; they made Her a partner to their oath and made Her vow not to reveal the sale of Joseph. Thus, until THE SALE OF Joseph was made known, the Shechinah did not rest upon Jacob.

chanoch's Commentary

The pasuk is clear as written. Does the Shechina make vows at the instigation of men? Te answer is no. Vows need to be made without coercion - from free will.

וְאִי תֵימָא דִּשְׁכִינְתָּא לָא אִשְׁתַּכְּחַת עִמְּהוֹן, תָּא חֲזֵי, דִּכְתִיב שֶׁשָּׂם עָלוּ שְׁבָטִים שִׁבְטֵי יָהּ עֵדוּת לְיִשְׂרָאֵל לְהוֹדוֹת לְשֵׁם יי', כֻּלְּהוּ צַדִּיקֵי וַחֲסִידֵי, קִיּוּמָא דְכָל עַלְמָא, קִיּוּמָא אִינוּן לְעֵילָא וְתַתָּא.

Translation

If you say that the Shechinah was not with THE TRIBES, come and behold the verse, "There the tribes used to go up, the tribes of Yah, an appointed practice for Yisrael to give thanks to the name of Hashem" (Tehilim 122:4). They were all just and pious, the sustenance of the inhabitants of the world, FOR THE WHOLE WORLD ENDURED THANKS TO THEM both above and below, IN THE UPPER AND LOWER WORLDS.
