Week of December 12, 2010 Shabbat Vayechi 11 Tevet טבת, 5771 | |
---|---|
This week the Parasha of Vayechi ויחי is read. The meaning of Vayechi is usually translated as "And he lived". Due to the initial Vav, It may be translated as "And he is living. This explains the essence of this Parasha - Living is actually a connection to the Resurrection of the Dead. In Hebrew this is Techiat HaMaytim spelled תחיית המתים. If one follows the assumptions that many secular people adhere to: This is the only life and there is nothing else beyond it (Chas V'Shalom), then the word living means you come to an end called death. The Kabbalists teach that living implies continuation through the resurrection of the dead known as Techiat Hamaytim. Here is a link that you must copy and paste to see. (i am having some technical difficulties with my email program). www.yeshshem.com/cartoon-summary-vayechi.htm. This link will take you to a cartoon story of the Parasha. It is not kabbalistic but saves a lot of ink in describing the story as we go forward with our teachings. I hope you enjoy it. Please let us know by writing to us at yeshshem@hotmail.com. Techiat HaMaytim is one of the 13 principles of faith espoused by Maimonides. Yet in truth, many people are not ready to accept this as a principle in their life. Since consciousness is paramount in receiving the goodness from God, it is important that people develop an acceptance of this principle. The question is how does one learn to accept the truth of Techiat HaMaytim? Ultimately this can only come with experience. Just as knowledge of God can only come with personal experience. This is probably why the development of medical technology will be the manner in which Techiat Hamaytim will manifest. I personally hope that the spreading of the wisdom of Kabbalah will allow people to experience the truth of the Resurrection for themselves. That way Techiat HaMaytim can manifest through miracles and wonders rather than in hte natural progression of medical technology. We will just have too "see" which path it takes. Yet know this truth. It will manifest as it is prophecised to do so. It will manifest! Are you waiting breathlessly? or are you doing your spiritual work to make it happen? Hearing this Parasha can help you achieve this essence in your life! As taught in last weeks email, there is no space between the end of Vayegash and the beginning of Vayichi. Here is what i wrote last week. Please note that next's week reading is called Vayechi which means And he lives. We must understand the spiritual lesson - In order to live (actually live and not just exist) we must be in unity. That is why there is no space between the Parasha of Vayigash and Vayechi. Torah Readings: Genesis Chapter 47 Verse 28 to Chapter 50 Verse 26. There are 85 Verses which is, in gematria, Peh Hay פה. The code phrase is פה אל פה. This phrase means "Mouth to Mouth". This is understood Kabbalistically due to the fact that this is the last Parasha of the Sefer Beraishit. Our mouth is the last part of our Heads. The Sefer Beraishit is considered the Keter or Crown of the Torah. Why are there 12 Parashiot in the Sefer Beraishit? It is not because there are 12 Tribes but the reason is also why there are 12 Tribes? I have taught you this in previous emails so i will let you think about the answser and perhaps give it again to you at the end of the email. Maftir: Chapter 50 Verses 23 to 26. There is 1 space in the Maftir. Spaces: There are 13 spaces in the Parasha. Thirteen connects us to Echad (Gematria of 13) which means one. Haftara: Sephardim and Ashkenazim read the same Haftara: Kings Aleph chapter 27 Verses 1 to 12. There are 12 Verses - for the same reason as the questions above. See the answer below. There are 3 spaces in this Reading. Three connects us to the Tree of Life - Right column (sharing), Left column (receiving), and Center column (Balance). Written and Spoken Verses: There are 2 words written differently than they are spoken in the Parasha. Both of these words are in the same verse. It is Chapter 49 Verse 11. Here is the verse for you to picture: Hebrew: אסרי לגפן עירו עירה ולשרקה בני אתנו כבס ביין לבשו ובדם-ענבים סותו סותה English: Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine; he washeth his garments in wine, and his vesture in the blood of grapes; The large Hebrew words are what is said. The words after them are the written words in the scroll. This verse is generally considered to be a prophecy about the Messianic Age. The English translation of the third word in the verse is a corruption. The spoken word can be interpreted as "his city". The written word comes from the shoresh ערה which has several meanings including "to join", "to expose', "to empty", "to spill", and "to demolish". This written word is also an Aramaic word meaning "innertwine" or "poor". The last word in the sentence also is a corrupted translation. The Hebrew has no meaning in the written form but in Aramaic it means "error". Suffice it to say the verse is extremely esoteric and difficult to understand. One of the meanings behind the difference in spelling and speaking of these words is they join the Vav with the Hays twice. This gematria is 22 (5 + 6 twice). This is bringing all of the energy of the Hebrew letters into this verse. Let me clear in explaining this. In both cases the difference between the spoken and written is a Vav is the last letter or a Hay is the last letter in both words. A Hay at the end of a word represents our physical world when using the metaphor of the Tetragramaton. A Vav at the end of a word represents the spiritual world again using the Tetragramaton as the metaphor. The gematria of Vav is 6; the gematria of Hay is 5; Together they are 11. This happens with both words; Eleven times 2 is 22 which represents all of the Hebrew Letters. This is one of the meanings behind these words being spoken differently than they are written. Truthfully i do not yet understand this verse. I look forward to the day that it is explained to me! Will you be the one to do so? I invite you to send me your understandings of this verse. In the Haftara there are no words written differently than they are spoken. Dots: There are no Dots over any letters in this Parasha or Haftara. Large or Small Letters: There are no large or small letters in either reading. Columns: There are 6 columns in all of the scroll that start with a letter that is different from a Vav. The first is the first column which is the word Beraishit starting with a Bet. The second is the Yood that starts the word Yehudah in the Verse Chapter 49 verse 8. The 6 letters at the top of columns which are not Vavs spell the word ביה שמו. This translates as "With Yah is his Name". As promised, this year i will give some insights into the Haftarot. On the physical level it is easy to see the connection between the Parasha and the Haftara. Jacob is preparing for his death and is giving guidance (prophecy) to his children. This is true of David also. Yet how do we make the spiritual level connection for Techiat HaMaytim (Resurection of the Dead)? It is just as easy to do when we learn the many midrashim teaching that David (who is a chariot for Malchut - who has no light of her own) was to be still born. Yet many of the previous generations gave him years from their lives. Adam gave all 70 years and thus only lived 930 years and not 1000. Abraham and Jacob gave over various years also totaling 70 years. Techiat HaMaytim is resurrection of the dead. If one is to be still born and yet lives 70 years what do you call it? Techiat HaMaytim or something else! Techiat Hamaytim is a subject that most people find difficult to connect with. Will it happen by miraculous means and i will get a call . . . "Come pick up your Dad he was just resurrected" or is it just a metaphor for a change in my life like my business almost going bankrupt . . .and then it recovers. There are many ways to understand each subject of Torah. David living 70 years is actually a resurrection of the dead. How so you ask? He was borrn dead (still born) and yet it is recorded that he lived 70 years. He must have been resurrected at the moment of birth even if the Torah does not record that event. Just because something is not recorded and is kept concealed does not mean it did not happen! In the Parasha, Jacob blesses Joseph and his sons first as is befitting the first born. Yet Joseph is not the first born. Why does he take as his own children Menashe and Efraim the children of Joseph? The midrash answers that the night that Reuben rearranged Jacobs bed in Bilha tent was the night that these 2 children were to have been conceived as Jacobs sons. Since that did not happen they were conceived by Joseph and it was appropriate that Jacob take them in the physical world since they were already his in the spiritual world. We learn from this a spiritual law. If something happens in the physical world, it is meant to happen, and it is NEVER WRONG. I have asked a question for over 20 years that bothers me about this Parasha. This year i received an answer that satisfies me. The Parasha teaches us that Joseph had Jacob mummified. This is an Egyptian practice and against Jewish Halacha. Why did he do this? It can not be that he beleived in the Egyptian practice. Joseph is a son of Jacob and Israel and never left that teachings even with all of his hard life. So why did he have Jacob mumified. The answer i received teaches that Joseph knew his fathers body would not deteriorate as he is a Tzadik. Tzadikim do not die; their bodies do not decay; He also knew the Egyptian practice is to mourn for a lenghty period of time. The populace of Egypt would see that Jacobs body did not decay and they would start to worship as a God. To prevent this, he had Jacob and then later his own body mummified. This also teaches us the connection to Techiat HaMaytim. The Egyptian practice of mummifcation is an attempt at Resurrection. Keeping the body in perfect shape for 1000s of years so that the soul may return to its body was the reason behind developing this science. When the redemption from Egypt took place this science was destroyed because only the first born of Egypt knew the secrets invovled. All of the first born of Egypt were killed during the 10th plague. They took the secrets of mummification to their graves and this science has never been successfully duplicated, even with our modern technologies. As said earlier in this email. Techiat HaMaytim will evolve through natural growth of medical technology or through a miraculous pattern. Which is up to us. Will we yearn for the return of our loved ones or choose to wait to see what happens? If we yearn to see physically our loved ones who have passed, then the strength of that desire can manifest as a miraculous resurrection of the dead. The alternative is to watch the medical technology develop slowly but surely in the natural order of development until our technology can manifest the dead back into life. After all it was only 30 years ago that the electrical shock machines brought heart attack victims back from the dead. Now they are part and parcel of every wall of every school just in case they are needed to save lives. In Kabbalah, The Sefer Beraishit is referred to as the Keter (crown) of the Torah. Let me show you an amazing relationship in the Torah Scroll. There are 20,612 words in Sefer Beraishit. this converts to this word in Hebrew כתריב. The first 3 letters spell the word Keter. The last 2 letters have the gematria of 12. Now you know where the Kabbalists learned about the relationship of the 12 Tribes and the Torah. The scroll is the Crown of the 12 Tribes. Why 12? It is 4 times 3. Three represents the 3 columns Right, Left, and Central. 4 represents the Tetragramaton - the 4 Letter name of God. 12 represents the Tetragramaton on the right, the Tetragramaon on the Left, and The Tetragramaton in the Central. Now, what spiritual message do i have for you this week dealing with Techiat Hamaytim. Religions that teach "Do Good and you will be rewarded in heaven" have a great difficulty with the Kabbalists who teach everyone will be Resurrected. By the way, Judaism does not teach the above. Judaism teaches what the Kabbalists teach. You have free choice. To become a better person today than you were yesterday. or Not. If you become a better person you will be resurrected. If you don't become a better person and become a rapist and murderer you still will be resurrected. So why should i become a better person? Why don't i become a hedonist and enjoy the physical pleasures of this world? (For your information, contrary to modern psychological teachings, rapists and murderers do experience pleasure usually known as the adrenalin rush). Becoming a better person allows us to shorten the process and helps remove chaos and pain from our path to the Mashiach. We can have the illusion of physical pleasures accompanied by pain, suffering , and chaos. Or we can have true eternal happiness and pleasure in this phsyical world which we call Heaven on Earth. The choice is Yours! We all have heard about the Showa (the Holocaust), even if we do not remember living and dying through it. And then reincarnating into our present lives. That (The Showa) is remembered by the world as a chaotic event. The Prophecies describe much worse. Negative Prophecies do not have to manifest. We can choose to continue our love affair with the physical pleasures of this world, continue our lack of spiritual work. This will allow these chaotic prophecies to manifest. Or we can choose to make sure that does not happen. It is our choice. It is your choice! I choose to do the spiritual work and give up my raping and pillaging. How about you? Start to learn Kabbalah! Start to use the tools of Kabbalah (like the Ana Bekoach, The Zohar, The 72 Names, restriction, and others). The alternative is a longer more chaotic path for the world. If we do the path will be shorter and will entail less chaos. Have you been comfortable for the past 2 years with the financial unrest and other chaos? If the answer is no; then why have you not started to learn Kabbalah? If you have started to learn Kabbalah, are you truly putting in the effort to change yourself? Or are you going through the motions? Are you happy yet? This is the promise of the Torah, when you learn Kabbalah. When you learn Torah for 5 years and you are still not happy then the Torah is a Tree of Death for you (Chas V'Shalom). When you learn Torah at the level of secrets...at the level of Kabbalah then it is a Tree of Life for you! Which do you want? The Tree of Life or the alternative!
