Week of December 12, 2010 Shabbat Vayechi 11 Tevet ???, 5769 | |

This week the Parasha of Yitro or Jetro is read. It is the fifth week of the period of Shovavim ??????!. Please read the discussion about Shovavim from a previous weeks email about Shemot. Also For additional informaton about Tshuvah please listen to recordings about Tshuvah. Here is a link for a cartoon summary of the Parasha. We hope you enjoy it. Torah Readings: Exodus Chapter 18 Verse 1 to Chapter 20 Verse 23. There are 72 Verses which, by gematria, is Ayin Bet ?? 7. The code word from the Sages is ?????. This word is a name that comes from the root relating to sharing. This is understood easily when we realize that the Esser Debrot is in this Parasha. There are 1105 words in the Parasha. This gematria is equal to a word that means drinking ????. The essence of Yitro is complex and simple at the same time. The Esser Debrot (corruptly translated as 10 Commandments). It is the totality of the Light of the Creator as evidenced by the Esser Debrot. That is the simple essence as the creation manifests the simple thought of creation. Which is to share goodness with the creations. Maftir: Chapter 20 Verses 19 to 23. There are 5 verses and is 1 space in the Maftir. Spaces: There are 15 spaces in the Parasha. 15 is the gematria of the name of God Yah ??. This name is taught by the Kabbalists to represent the upper worlds that are usually concealed. It is the work of man to reveal these worlds in the physical world. This is the meaning and essence of the Parasha Yitro as well. Haftara: Sephardim and Ashkenazim read similar but different Haftaras: Ashkenazim reads Judges Chapter 6 Verse 1 to Chapter 7 Verse 6, plus an additional 2 verses in Chapter 9 Verse 5 and 8. It has 21 Verses and 4 spaces. Sephardim read Chapter 6 Verse 1 to 13. There are 13 verses and 1 space. Both of these numbers refer to unity. Written and Spoken Verses: In the parasha and the Sephardic Haftara, there are no words spelled differently than they are spoken. In the Ashkenazi Haftara there is 1 word written as 2 words and spoken as 1 word. It is in Chapter 9 Verse 6. The first word is written in 2 words ?? and ???. While the word is pronounced as 1 word ?????. The word ?? has no specific meaning except its gematria of 70 and 630. (Final letters have 2 number values the number 630 represents the Spherot of Binah in its final corrected form. 70 relates to the 70 Nations. The word ??? means to multiply or increase greatly. As per the prophecy when the Mashiach manifests the physical world will increase greatly. When the word is said as one set of letters it means many and is translated that way - the way it is spoken. Dots: There are no Dots over any letters in this Parasha or Haftara. Large or Small Letters: There are no large or small letters in either reading. Columns: All columns start with a Vav. There are 2 complete columns and 2 partial columns. As promised, this year i will give some insights into the Haftarot. On the physical level it is not easy to see the connection between the Haftara and the Parasha. The Haftara speaks about Holyness. The Parasha speaks about the Esser Debrot. It is only when we realize that the Esser Debrot is the essence of Holyness that we can make the physical and spiritual connections. Holyness is a difficult item to explain. Holyness is related to seperation and elevation (based on the meaning of the Hebrew Shoresh). HaShem determines who and what is Holy by seperating it and elevating it. Hashem is Holy; Israel is Holy; the Land of Israel is Holy. All because Hashem separated (chose) and by choosing he elevated these items. In the Parasha, there is the Esser Debrot which consists of 620 Letters, 172 words and the 10 Utterances. There are many levels of understanding these verses. There are many questions and commentaries made about these verses. There are actually 3 sets of Trope to say these verses. There is the public set which consists of 9 verses. There are some traditions that say this should be 10 verses. There is also the set of Trope for private study which consists of 13 verses. Rather than discuss the differences in these trope and their meaning i would like to address a very unusual subject that is almost never discussed other than to mention it in passing by the Sages. Our teaching is that there is no extra letter in the Tanach. Yet in the first paragraph of the Parasha of Yitro the word Choten ??? is written 7 times and 1 additional time as ????. This latter word means your father in law while the first spelling means father in law. All 8 times it refers to Moshe's father in law Yitro. With different vowels this spelling can also mean son in law and also groom. The word for father in law is never spelled completely anywhere in the Tananch. It is always spelled without the Vav. All of these are extra. They are not necessary for us to realize that Yitro is Moshe father in law. They are extra for that context because we learn about this relationship earlier in the book of Shmot. So what is the learning and spiritual laws these 8 "extra" words teach us. I do not know and have not read the meaning for this anomoly in the Torah. Here is my thoughts up to this point in time. When ever a word is spelled incompletely, (without the vav) it indicates its meaning will change when the Mashiach comes. Also one of the standard letter substitutions is a Mem Sofit for a Nun Sofit. When this is done the word can be understood as 8 completions. This may apply to the nation of the Kennites that will go through 8 corrections during the cycle of history or it may mean something else entirely. It may be indicating the 8 Sepherot from Binah to Malchut as well. I also would like to express an Kabbalistic teaching about morals and ethics. The Torah is not a book of morals and ethics. It has to do essentially with spiritual relationships and energies. Given these truths, How do we understand the essence of each of the Esser Debrot if they are not morals or ethics? I am not going to explain this as i want each of you to consider this issue during this year. Next year Besrat Hashem i will explain it. This year, as you go through the year i want you to ask yourself what is the spiritual relationship included in "Do not Murder"; Do not steal; Do not Covet; Honor your Mother and Father; Keep Shabbat; Do not steal; and why "Do not lie" is not included. Usually i give you a teaching at the end of each email asking you to improve yourself. The Esser Debrot do that always and it is not needed this week if you contemplate the above paragraphs.
