Torah: Parasha Beha'Alotcha -Numbers Chapter 8 Verse 1 to Chapter 12 Verse 16
Haftara: Zacharia Chapter 2 Verse 14 to Chapter 4 Verse 7
The essence of Parasha Beha'Lotcha is connecting us to the Light. This is actually continuing the offerings from the 12 Tribal Cheiftans in Parasha Naso. In this Parasha we connect to the 13th Tribe which is the Tribe of Levi. 13 connects to unity which allows us to elevate into the spiritual realm.
Commentary for Year 5777
Beha'Alotcha translates as "when you light". On its surface it refers to lighting the Menorah by the Head of the Tribe of Levi - Aaron HaCohen Gadol.
The Menorah MUST be made from one piece of material - Gold. The question is WHY?
The midrash explains that Moshe could not understand how to make a Menorah from one piece of material. Moshe who represents the unity of people could not understand how to unify a simple piece of gold or silver. HaShem even showed him a vision of the steps and processes to achieve this unification and still he was unable to comprehend this idea.
The Kabbalah teaches that this inability was caused by the unity of the Children of Israel. Since the Children of Israel included people who could not accept that death could be swallowed up forever. They included people who could not conceive of a world without decay. Without illness. Without business failures. Without perceiving "I is not you". Without understanding there is no I only WE. This consciousness of separation existed within the unity of Moshe and that is why Moshe could not perceive of unity including diversity. Remember there are 7 candles within the Menorah yet only one Menorah.
These levels of consciousness of separation still exist in the physical world and within people. This reading of the Torah on Shabbat BehaAlotcha is the tool to learn unity while appreciating diversity.
